The pilot goes out when the heater cycles

The thermocouple is not working correctly. sometimes you can clean the soot build up from it and it will work again. sometimes they just need replacing. the thermocouple is what the pilot light flame heats up when you turn on the heater. when the thermocouple gets hot it sends a 20 to 60 millivolt signal to the gas valve to activate the gas flow to the main burner.

Chimney type wall furnace. The furnace won't start However after switch was off for a couple hours and turn on the switch it started. What is a possible problem?

The problem sounds like the thermocouple is not working correctly. After being off for a couple hours allowed it to cool down and reset. It is a Williams circa 1985 gravity direct vent wall furnace mdel 30DV 5, 30,000 btu. Light pilot OK. Heat on OK. But when heat not called for (several hours) pilot must go out. There is a small penny...

That hole should only be a problem, if a strong draft comes thru and blows the pilot out. But that hole may also be for match lighting the pilot in an emergency. The older models like yours, had that feature. Check it closely, before you decide to block off the hole.

Hope this helped you.

How to reset vent safety switch Williams wall furnace model 3509622

the reset is at the top left side of the furnace. take the cover off n press the red button. the switch could be failing but CHECK drafting through the furnace. hold a flame at the top of the furnace n make sure its pulling inward. u could have a blocked vent pipe or vent cap which will cause excessive heat n tip the safety switch. good luck!
