I have a eMachines T5082 and have attempted to upgrade the RAM to 2GB (2x1 gb) PC4200. The problem is the computer will read either one or the other of the modules but not both at the same time. Any suggestions?

The motherboard has only two slots and the limit is 1gb per slot. I have 1gb of RAM in each slot for a total of 2GB.

When both sticks are in, the system will only see 1GB. I have entered the BIOS to see if there is any type of configuration for RAM. In the BIOS for eMachines, it reports the amount of RAM and single or dual channel, but there is no configuring options. I save every time I exit the BIOS.

It reports 1GB. I have looked for a bios update from eMachines but not from Acer.

some computers require ram be installed in a certain way, how many ram slots do you have, and how many sticks of ram are you using?

Sorry, i re-read your post and saw that you are using 2 sticks,, if you have 4 slots for ram, insert one into the first slow, skip a slot and put the second stick in the 3rd slot, give it a try.

ok.. so if you put in both sticks, what does it do? some motherboards require you to enter the bios setup. and exit and save it before it will use the full amount. give that a try and let me know how it works out.

So when your in the bios it reports the 2 gigs? or only 1 gig? have you checked for a bios update from emachines/acer?

  • Anonymous Dec 12, 2009

they may have to be a set pair, the 2 different sticks may not be able to operate together, not very common, but.

see if you can get a hold of a paired package of 2x1GB sticks that were made to be together, usually called a dual channel kit.

Acer desktp internal ram installation needed

I'm a bit confused....did you have all four of these in the ACER and are trying to put the 2x1GB into the Emachine? And that the 2x1 GB wouldn't work in the Emachine but they did in the ACER and that the 2x512 Acer cards worked in the emachine?

If that is what happened here is my best guess. The ACER MOBO will support 533/667/800 MHZ DDR2 RAM. The Emachine will only support 533 RAM. Iys possible the 2x1GB are either 667 or 800 MHZ and are not compatible with the Emachine but will work in the ACER.

Trying to upgrade t5082 emachines from 1/2 to to 2g. the only way it will boot is if I leave the 1/2g in slot one & put one of the 2g in slot 2. Is there a way to make slot 1 read the 2g?

Your motherboard has a 1GB limit per slot so the 2 GB sticks are simply not recognized. Take them back and replace them with a 2x1GB set if you still want to upgrade the RAM.

MacBook Pro 15'' RAM Problems

The earliest MacBook (Pro) models have a limit of 2 GB. To check the specific model, in the Apple menu select about this Mac. Then press more info... . Look at the line like "Model Identifier: MacBook5,2" for my white early 2009 MacBook. If the numbers are 1,1 then for sure you have the oldest model and are memory limited to 2 GB, as the sum of both cards.
That's just like my wife's, it was a Core Duo and not the current Core 2 Duo. Works fine. I was ready to up its memory but read about this in the Apple Support Forum. It came originally with 1 stick of 512 MB, IIRC. I upgraded it to 2x1 GB for a lot more than the 2x2 GB in the newer. BTW some of the Macs between these only take 3 GB but will work with 2x2 GB just throwing 1 GB away. -Ken

Upgrading memory to 4GB failure

try to see if that memory is supported with your motherboard. The memory has something to do with that problem.
