Are your colors out of convergence also? If so this is a classic symptom of bad Convergence ICs.

Picture shrinks to only show top half

This is a common problem on certain models of Philips Magnavox TV sets. The most common symptom is the screen will shrink and expand over and over. After the TV heats up for a while the video will work like normal. After a few weeks or months your TV will eventually stop working and not have video. You can get complete parts and instructions from www.TvRepairKits.com

Picture getting darker

first thing i would look at is it is probabily dust on the lences and miror, you need to take the screws out all the way arount the screen from the back, then lean the screen out tward you from the front, do this while the tv is on, you will be able to see the dust alot better, take a soft cloth and glass cleaner and clean little miror, and lences

Magnavox 51mp392h

replace the convergence ICs STK392-120 you will need both of them also check the 6.8 ohm resistors right next to the ICs as often 1 or 2 of them burn open. You should be able to notice the discoloration in the center of the resistors.

MAGNAVOX 51MP392H/17 CONCAVED PICTURE

There is a mode these set run in that stretches the side so the screen is completely filled, this is so the people do not seem all fat and short, this mode is known as Panoramic, this is one of the screen settings you can choose, I believe your set has a 4X5 or normal mode, 16X9 and maby a 16X9 zoom, the panoramic and maybe one more, find the format button on the remote and cycle through them

Magnavox 51mp392H picture distortion and color problem

I had the same problem where all of a sudden it started bowing on top and bottom and the colors were bad. I read on here and other sites about the 2 convergance chips so I figured why not try as the tv was going to get thrown away because I could not find anyone that would touch it. Well I ordered 2 stk392-120's (I know others are saying use the 150's or 180's but I just wanted to put the same ones that were in there) I ordered them from electronix.com for 9.99 each plus 6.60 for shipping they took 3 days to get here and I installed them tonight and it worked great. The whole thing took only about 2 hours from start to finish. Here's a couple of tips....the chips are on the far left when looking at the tv from the back, make sure you mark with a marker where the wires go that you have to unplug as there are about 10 of them, each chip has 19 pins that you will have to soder make sure you have a soder ****** to get all the old soder up as you are heating them up, after you are done puting it back together leave the back cover off and turn it on, then go into your menu and go to pictureand go to manual converge and go to undo multpoint and restore factory as this will reset it all. Then if your color is still a little off as mine was there are 6 knobs in the back of the tv by the chips you were working on, find a channel with a lot of colors and try adjusting the top 3 a little at a time till you get the right color that you like. This should do it. It took 26 bucks and 2 hours for me to fix a tv I was ready to replace, thank god for the internet to be able to look stuff like this up. Good luck!

Hour glass picture

I would suspect that the convergency amplifiers ICs are not working.
Are the colours distorted?

Problem with convergence

Try re-soldering the circuit board that contains the STK convergence modules. They're on the center circuit board attached to an aluminum heat sink that's about 8" long and 6" tall, about dead center in the circuit board. You may be able to recreate the problem (hour glass effect) by gently moving the heat sink (which the modules are connected to). This gives the hour glass effect on the picture and the advanced convergence screen. This is an indication that the modules pins aren't solidly connected (meaning soldered) properly. Remove the circuit board and clean the old solder off & resolder the modules pins to the circuit board reconnected the board and then retest by again pushing on the heat sink. This is a caused by a minimum effort (a.k.a. minimum cost) solder job, probably done in some 3rd world sweat shop. The "factory" job was good enough for 3-4 years but the heat (and these modules do create a lot of heat) and stress created from repeated use eventually takes it's toll, weakens the pin connections and our problem occurs. take the appropriate cautions working around the high voltage of the set & use a non-conduting piece of wood to push the heat sink when we doing tests. Best of luck, hope ya fix it.
