Could you be more specific why you can't use your external drive? Maybe it's not correctly installed?

Reboot the computer and plug the HD to the USB port again after the computer settles. Have Windows discover the device to install the driver and wait until it tells you that it is now available to use.

If it still has a valid warranty, exercise the warranty to get a free replacement.

Otherwise, open the enclosure, and separate the disk-drive from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter, and connect the disk-drive as a 'slave' disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if the adapter was the problem.

I've had this problem before (something similar) you'll need additional software from Maxtor.com so you're PC will recognize the new drive.

Are you connecting Drive via a USB hub or direct into two separate USB sockets on PC?
