Try starting it in safe mode.
When the computer is starting just after the beep or when the bios info goes away press f8 repeatedly and you will get an option to open in regular or safe mode.
Alternativly you can also hold down teh ctrl key and it should do the same.
Did you install or update and drivers recently?
try to boot in safe mode.To do that. restart your computer continues press F8 key it will show the option select safe mode and you can work with that and change the reasoluition and restart the computer work with normal mode..
I think your macbook is running on power save mode. This will turn your screen black (off) after few minutes of no interaction with the computer or if your PC is on idle.

only if you got a blue screen and computer goes off - that will be a problem
but black screen could be a monitor or power issue ..
try to restart and check whether you get the picture or sound or both
This can happen when there is two problems.. One the computer might have been affected by virus.. Or the other thing might be the OS corrupted.. Try to get into safe mode and check if the system is working fine.. If it works well there try to do a system restore to a place wr it was working well.. If in safe mode also it doesnt work well then go ahead and reinstall the OS...
Right click on your desktop go down list to properties and left click under the screensaver tab click the power tab and turn off the power saver in other words change settings to always on and no hibernation
the video/graphics you opened is too high where the video card of your unit cant handle it which turns into overdrive. upgrade your video card if necessary
