When I start my gx280 the computer directly go in safe mode only yellow light on and take speed in loud noise.

  • ms_zz2001 Dec 08, 2009

It means processors fan taking high speed.

  • YourFixed May 11, 2010

Just to help clarify.. When you start the computer, it starts up only in safe mode with a loud noise coming from the computer. Is this accurate? Can you explain a little bit more on what you mean by "take speed"? Thank you.

You possibly have a harddrive issue, The noise thing doesnt sound good. Could be the drive thats physically Faulty.
I would start the computer with your windows cd in, Boot from the cd, And when asked, select the option R for recovery consol.
Once in the recovery consol, Run the CHKDSK /P command, And let check disk Find and repair corrupt files/ Hives.
If that doesnt help, You could also try doing a repair instalation, By using a similar method as above, Except when prompted, Select R for repair install.

Hope this helps

Dell opitiplex 280 is not giving display. first of all his fan speed to much high and then after 4 or 5 day its display disappeared. its just picking now power and fan also start with high noise and...

OK, I use GX280s as home servers and ran into a similar problem with one of them...

The problem may be serious and not worth fixing (motherboard).

Turn power on
Fan(s) come on full power, sounds like a jet engine, or eventually gets that loud.

See if you power light has gone amber.

You get nothing on the screen, no Dell splash screen/post, nothing.

This is what I posted a while back concerning the above. Obviously I cannot bee 100% certain as I do not have your box in front of me. This a known issue.

--------

See if the power light goes amber after power up. I had (have - still siting in my basement) one that did same. Power up, fans go full blast . Power light goes and stays amber. This is USUALLY caused by bad capacitors on the mother board. Known GX280 problem going back. If you look on the motherboard, the capacitors should have flat tops and not leaking. If the are rounded or leaking, the MB has probably gone bad. Bottom line this is usually a defective motherboard. Mine was a bad caps issue, you issue could be different, but it does sound like the motherboard.

You can google "gx280 solid amber light loud fan" and see the issues. Here is one link.

I just replaced one of my old 280s with a dual core Dell Precision 390 workstation for about $118, and that included shipping, off of ebay.

Dell optiplex GX280 PC when power on system no noise with fan after one hour making loud noise . I changed the CPU fan , also same noise, and applied heat sink paste to CPU and heat sink same noise....

There probably is another fan, located inside the power-supply, that is making all the noise.

Borrow a stethoscope from a nurse or doctor, and listen to the noise, to pinpoint "where" on the computer that is the origin of the noise.

Dell Optiplex GX280 restarts suddenly? all files closed and . the restart could be after 2,3 minutes of power on. I don't know why its behaving like this?

Hi, sounds like a crash, do you get any report messages after reboot? Try starting in safe mode; press Del button during initial bootup, once in safe mode you can reset to a time before the problem started. Hope this helps, if not come back to me?

Dell GX280 will not boot into OP. Keeps looping back to the Safe Mode screen over and over. Anyone know whats up?

This looks like a software or hardware conflict. Try running 'chkdsk' from WinXP setup cd (or Vista's), (after booting, choose option to repair).

If disk check does not help, then you will have to back-up your data manually, format the harddrive, and re-install OS.

GX280 - is it the motherboard?

Go here and download this program.

http://www.download.com/SpeedFan/3000-2094_4-10067444.html

This program will control your fan speed based on your cpu temp. It's main use is to quiet fan noise.
