Freezer and cooling stopped. compressor does not appear to be running, it is med hot. fan is running. this is a whirlpool refrigerator, side by side about 6 yr old

turn your frig off as soon as possible! this is an easy fix but if it goes to long it can cause permanent damage to the compressor and then you have a huge repair bill, or a big piece of trash :(
What has happened is this:
There is a fan called the condenser fan that blows air across the compressor to keep it cool. This fan has stopped working for some reason and now the compressor is VERY hot. When this happens it stops running and you get zero cold produced.
The reason the mullion is hot is because there is tubing connected to the compressor that is run through this area for condensation prevention purposes. When the condenser fan stops working, this tubing gets much hotter than normal, and that is what you are feeling.
So, replace the condenser fan motor before the compressor gets to hot that it damages itself! If I can be of further help please let me know, good luck friend!
You have a bad overload/relay . This is the piece pluged onto the side of the compressor , with 2 or 3 wires going to it . The part number is 8201786 . It is easily replaceable and instructions come with it . Price is around $60.00 .
Make sure the condenser fan underneath near the compressor is running when the compressor is.

If the evaporator coils are icing up because of defrost failure it will stop the circulation of air and cause this and cooling problems. The coils are behind the rear cover inside the freezer.
is the fan by compressor running? is the fan in the freezer running? is the compressor running or just trying and clicking periodically? if one of the fans isnt running..replace if compressor is clicking every so often..replace compressor start relay. lastly...is there frost in freezer on back wall towards bottom? defrost control/defrost t-stat/defrost heater.

Check the back wall of the freezer for ice buildup.
If yes, a defrost parts problem.
Check the freezer fan. Is it running?
If no, replace the freezer fan.
Check the condenser fan at the compressor. Is it running?
If no, is compressor hot?
If compressor is hot replace condenser fan motor.
If compressor is not hot.
Replace the compressor start relay.
When the fans are running the compressor should also be running. If the compressor is hot but not running you have a compressor problem. If the compressor is running check for frost on back wall of the freezer compartment which would indicate a defrost system problem. At five years old have you cleaned the condenser where the heat is transferred to the outside air in the room?
hi thanks for the question you say the fridge is still running is the fan in the freezer running at the back is the compressor running if the compressor is not running and is very hot it could be a bad compressor is there a fan down by the compressor if there is a fan by the compressor is it going if not replace the fanthanks the appliance doc
