This could be an issue with your DMD board or your Video Board.
Go to the menu, if the white spots show on the menu, the issue is with your DMD board, but if they don't show, the issue is with your Video board.

Could be backlight or the Invertor. While the sound is operating shine a flashlight into the screen and see if you can see the picture or not then let me know and I will assist you. But I will also need the model number of the set.
I had the same problem on my 61" RCA TV... The switch for the power/channel changing buttons seems to be a faulty product... However if you are a little technical you can open up the front of the TV and disconnect the button panel from the tv and just use the remote to operate it.
it sounds like the projection unit went out. if it is still under waranty then i would take back and get it fixed for free. if anything i would contact sony and tell them what is wrong with the tv.
