you need an xbox live account, a connected modem to your xbox, and to sign in in order to play online games.

this also happens when you recover you gamer tag too many times, its a safety thing, go to live.com sign in an you will have a message follow the steps to re activate your account, sill i know but it worked for me...

I am wired from my modem to my Xbox and it signs me in but everytime I put in a game as soon as it gets to the menu, it says "Disconnected from Xbox Live". I press my Xbox button and go to the dashboard and it signs me back in again. Why is this happening?

Call Xbox Live and make sure your account is still active. The card on the account to renew your membership could have expired!

Yeah... called xbox today and they say that due to the high volume of holiday signups.. it's thrown the server into all sorts of problems... they don't know when the problem is gonna be fixed.. but the guy said to keep tryin' every now and then and hope for the best... sucks!!

A lot of people have had this problem after the most recent spring update. If in the error message it said "can't retrieve media rights try again later" All you have to do is delete your original media rights. If not, you may have to call Microsoft for a solution.
