To unlock the menu on the 2280 power the printer on holding down the SETUP button. Keep the SETUP button held down whilst the printer initialises, the menu will then be unlocked.

The menu on the T2240 is locked to prevent accidental changes to menu settings, you can unlock the menu in the following way;
Start with the printer powered OFF
Hold down the SETUP button
Keep the SETUP button held down and power the printer ON
Keep the SETUP button held down until the printer has finished initializing, then release the SETUP button
The menu will be unlocked until the printer is reset or powered off.
You can turn the menu lock off by changing the MENLOCK option in the printers menu to OFF.
Is it a + version, with an Ethernet board included? These were known to cause such errors, seamingly not related at all. Try replacing the Ethernet board, or at least pull t out and disable to try.
You can reset the menu on the 2280 to factory default settings, but I would strongly recomend first printing a menu print to ensure you know how the menu is currently set up.
The menu can be printed in the follwoing way;
Switch the printer power on. Press the Setup key to enter the menu settings. Press the key under "Menu", Then press the key under "Print" and your current configuration will be printed.
If the menu is locked power the printer on holding down the setup button, this will unlock the menu.
To restore the factory defaults within the printer, switch the printer off. Press all four keys beneath the printer display and switch on the printer. Keep the keys pressed until "Initializing" is seen in the printer display. Your printer is now set to the factory default configuration.
