Hello, Thanks for using fixya.com!

chkdsk /f is to check your hard drive for errors. If there are drive errors you cannot defrag the hard drive.
Follow these steps to run disc checking:
1. Go to Computer Desktop
2. Select My Computer
3. Right-click the disc drive(usually C:)
4. Select properties
5. Select the tools tab in the window that pops up
6. Select "Error Checking" or "Check Now"
7. Make sure both check boxes are checked and then click ok. It may tell you it will run the next time you restart your computer.
8. Restart your computer and just let it run. You'll end up back in windows when it completes.

Let me know if you have any further questions!

You must have at least 15% free space in order to run defrag. Delete enough files to get to at least 20% free space and then run defrag in safe mode. Videos use up the most hard drive space so start there.

Reboot into safe mode. You can kill the power to the PC without shutting down. When you turn it back on it will ask you a few boot option, select safe mode, then try the defrag.

CHKDSK /r fails to complete to resolve Hard Drive Error 2000-0142 / 2000-0146

This is a regular problem on Win XP computers. They are old so the hard drive is also old. You may need to do a reinstall of your operating system. But you could try running RKill first it is a rootkit killer. This may find the problem in your software, but don't hold your breath, With chkdsk failing it is a reliable indicator of a physical failure on the hard disk. You need to consider that a hard disk is metal plates spinning very fast and while they are designed to take some knocks, over time a laptop takes more knocks than you would expect. The plain truth is, stuff breaks and need s replacing.

I cannot run defrag on my computer. I tryed the run chkdsk and it say dirty filedisk or something like that

click start run type cmd then type chkdsk/r/f which will scan for and attempt to repair any bad sectors and automatically fix any corrupt files on your hard drive

or an easier way i have found to run the chkdsk utility

click start control panel administrative tools computer management ,disk management right click on your drive select properties click tools you should see click check now click start two boxes

automatically fix files and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors place then a tick in both boxes then select check now, start should schedule this task when restart

have no input while the chkdsk utility is in progress any input may further damage your computers operating system and hard drive

I am running Windows XP Home SP3. When I try to run chkdsk from command promt, I type "Y" when asked if I want it to run on next startup, but get "Windows cannot end this program" and...

When you type "Y" then press enter, then type "exit" and press enter again.

The CHKDSK command on it's own will do nothing to correct any errors on the HDD. You need to qualify what you want CHKDSK to do.

Here is a list of parameters. eg. CHKDSK /f fixes any error found. Note there is a space between K and /

Will not boot

If you dont have the option to run:
"Windows XP Recovery Console"
You probably have to install windows on a second PHYSICAL drive, Disconnect the failing one first!
Reconnect the failing drive in slave mode.
1. Start/Run "cmd.exe"
2. execute "chkdsk /F /R /X D:"
3. Shutdown
4. Swap drives.
5. Start system (while praying :) )

Do a repair of the Operating System. Insert the OS cd and but from CD rom. when it prompts you for options chose R (Repair). chose the drive you want to repair and at the C:/ prompt type CHKDSK then enter. When done restart the system.

If this fails try a second level repair by reinstalling the OS but you will still retain your files
