Hello, Thanks for using fixya.com!
chkdsk /f is to check your hard drive for errors. If there are drive errors you cannot defrag the hard drive.
Follow these steps to run disc checking:
1. Go to Computer Desktop
2. Select My Computer
3. Right-click the disc drive(usually C:)
4. Select properties
5. Select the tools tab in the window that pops up
6. Select "Error Checking" or "Check Now"
7. Make sure both check boxes are checked and then click ok. It may tell you it will run the next time you restart your computer.
8. Restart your computer and just let it run. You'll end up back in windows when it completes.
Let me know if you have any further questions!
You must have at least 15% free space in order to run defrag. Delete enough files to get to at least 20% free space and then run defrag in safe mode. Videos use up the most hard drive space so start there.
Reboot into safe mode. You can kill the power to the PC without shutting down. When you turn it back on it will ask you a few boot option, select safe mode, then try the defrag.
click start run type cmd then type chkdsk/r/f which will scan for and attempt to repair any bad sectors and automatically fix any corrupt files on your hard drive
or an easier way i have found to run the chkdsk utility
click start control panel administrative tools computer management ,disk management right click on your drive select properties click tools you should see click check now click start two boxes
automatically fix files and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors place then a tick in both boxes then select check now, start should schedule this task when restart
have no input while the chkdsk utility is in progress any input may further damage your computers operating system and hard drive
