Carrier Gas Furnace runs fine randomly stops blowing LEDs flash

I have a 10 yr old Carrier Gas Furnace. Just started running again with cold weather. It runs fine but after a while it stops blowing heat. I go down and see red light flashing. I take off the cover and replace which activates the cover switch and it starts up fine and warms the house again. Could my thermostat be hosed? Appreciate any clues.

The solution to resolve the dreaded lockout was just to clean the flame sensor with fine steel wool. Works fine now.

That blinking light may be the diagnostic light. Count the blinks next time it fails. Carrier units will have two different blinks depicting the error code such as one blink followed by a pause than 3 blinks giving you an error code of 13. Then look at the wiring diagram, it will have an error code chart telling you where to start with your diagnosis. You already know that if you remove the cover it erases the error code, so look thru the small window first.

It sounds like it is going into overheat mode. Check the overheat sensor, make sure the flue is clean, make sure any filters are clean, also check the gas passage inthe heat exchanger, if there is a blockage from soot the system will overheat

you may need to replace the thermostat or the thermostat batteries if applicable. To replace the thermostat follow the instructions on the new thermostat. Make sure to set the thermostat to the gas setting(see instructions) this should cure your problem. Good Luck on the repairs

Furnace runs OK, but blower runs again a few seconds later

Could be a defective thermostat in the plenum.
When a gas furnace shuts down the fan(blower) will run until the plenum cools to the safe range. Usually 1 and 1/2 minutes.
Intermittent operation is a defective thermostat or relay.

Gas furnace false start

Check the filter and/or air flow in general. It may be over heating.

(HVAC) Furnace Not Igniting Quickly

Make sure a back draft in the flue is not happening. Wind can blow it out until the flue heats up. The flame sensor may not be close enough to the burner flame. It may be weak and need to be replaced or if its an optical one it may be dirty and not see the flame very well. Its not wasting much gas but it puts extra wear and tear on the gas controls, is noisy, and, as you said, blows cold drafty air. A gas control system that has issues of any kind is not real safe. It needs to get fixed.

Carrier Weathermaker gas 8000 will not ignite

Your hot surface igniter may be bad. It may be cracked which would prevent it from starting the burner flame.

Carrier Furnace wouldn't light, fan was running all the time.

Most furnaces have a photo cell if it gets dirty the photo cell does not see a flame so it trips the reset button on flame failure.
