After installing (MS IE 7 or MS IE 8) browser on the computer that is connected to the HP product,This issue occurs on some HP products. The MS IE 7 or 8 browsers might be incompatible with HP Director

SOURCE: HP Director is missing
I know this may not be yours or anyone’s exact printers but the fix should be the same, what ever is the current model for you printer download that software and install, with your printer USB cable disconnected. I have a HP PSC 1210 all in one printer with director and drop down menu problems. My son was having printing problems, ink, with his 1610xi so I loaded a full install of the software from HP for 1610xi with all printers disconnected followed through with complete install, check box install without connecting, and restart computer. After computer restart complete I plugged in my 1210 instead of the 1610 the software picked it up and everything worked with more options than I had before. It works great. I reset IE7 under tools, advance settings, reset just to make sure everything’s cleaned up. I also clicked update in director and everything updated. Just follow the prompts during the install such as overwrite, yes, delete unnecessary files, yes. All newer models of the same type of printers have the older model drivers in the program. Suspect, for example if such as mine, with 1610xi software installed all earlier HP PSC ALL-IN-ONE Printers drivers are in the program. It's like getting a free software upgrade you will love it. Must download full install version though. I an sure this will help all.....
