How many wired and wireless computers do you have ion the network. Do you have any wired computer ? Connect your laptop to the router with the Ethernet cable and try to access Internet. See if the wired connection is working or not. If the wired connection is working then I think you will need to check the wireless settings of the router and the laptop.
Ubuntu 10.10 for some reason made WIFI stop working you need to connect to the moden or router with a network cable and let ubuntu update itself. Best thing would be to update to ubuntu 11.04 which is the latest version.
Best to you!
Go into your UBUNTU netwrok settings and make sure the wireless is sending the correct Security and is set to the proper security mode. Unlike the wired connection most wireless connections are protected and require the computer that connects to send the correct key.
ubuntu's wireless support is flakey, but it improved with Ubuntu 9.04
I had a similar problem in Ubuntu 8.10 with Netgear WNDA3100. Recommend that you install Ubuntu 9.04 -- to get your Netgear wireless-N USB device working.

see if everything is working fine in wired mode. if not revert back to us. we will tel you what is the next step
thank you

kindly turn the power ON to router and then press the RESET button at the back of router for 30 SEC and when ur router blinks lights and restart it self that means u have resetted ur router to factory default settings

Most home router has an IP address of 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1. If you dad's laptop can connect to the router just fine, then it's a problem with your linux laptop. Can you see other wireless networks on your laptop?
