Hi rcstss, I would search youtube for that radio, in searching include the word "Mods", if you feel comfortable opening up the case, make sure you have the proper tools handy. Such as a set of "Plastic Tuneing Tools, also a Watt Meter with SWR, and Modulation on it. Also, a Dummy load for the freguencies that it will cover! You would not like to interfere with your freinds. There are a LOT of Mods for that radio.! Or try and find some shop that you can TRUST! It really sounds like a simple problem to fix, but I'm an Old Ham, and it just second nature to me. And I have more equipment than I really have room for! A super star will only put out around 28 to 30 watts, any more you need a linear, you could have you r swr checked to make sure your antenna is good, any good antenna should talk around 10 miles

Remove the top cover from the unit and locate the PLL chip (MC145106P). Unsolder the short jumper wire running from the +8.2vdc source to pin 9 of the PLL chip. 2.

Resolder the three pins of the PLL chip, Pins 10, 11, and 12, being carefull not to short them together.

AFTER LOOKING AT THE SCHEMATIC DRAWING VR 11 IS THE MODULATION ADJUSTER TURN THE DYNAMIC ALL THE WAY CLOCKWISE REMOVE THE SPEAKER COVER AND LOOK TOWARD THE BACK OF TH RADIO YOU WILL SEE A TRANSFORMER WITHE THE FACEPLATE TOWARD YOU ON THE LEFT SIDE YOU SHOULD FIND VR11 TURN THAT POT ONLY DO NOT THINK YOU WILL TUNE THE RADIO YOURSELF BECAUSE IT WILL MESS IT UP AND IT WILL COST ANYWHERE FORM $50 TO 75.00 TO GET IT ALIGNED.TURN VR11 TO OPEN THE MODULATION CIRCUIT YOU WILL KNOW IF YOU GO THE WRONG WAY YOU WILL LOOSE MODULATION TURN IT OPPOSITE AND IT WILL COME BACK MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A ANTENNA CONECTED WHILE YOU KEY THE MIC TO MAKE THIS ADJUSTMENT.
1-Shield 2-White 3-Red 4-Black Check the mike plug to make sure that none of the wires have broke off.I would also check the mike cable with an ohm meter.
