Briggs and Stratton 8500 HP generator with only .4 hours of use. Was running ther generator with no problems when electrical output suddenly stopped. Genreator runs fine, just no electrical output. It is as though the circuit breaker tripped and will not reset. I can find nothing in the manual to address this, and no amount of pushing the reset buttons on the front panel works.

No wiring diagram available from Briggs. Try re-magnetizing the rotor. No AVR or Capacitor listed in the parts list.
Disconnect the wires to brushes ( pay attention to the order) and apply 12vdc to brushes. Positive goes to brush closest to the bearing. Start the generator and check for output. If output is normal run the unit a few minutes to ensure re-magnetization then shut down normally. After shut down disconnect the 12 vdc source and re-install the previous disconnected wires. Now re start the generator and test for output should be okay provide there is no problems with the alternator. If no output during the above re-magnetization then your rotor windings my burned out.
Usually the cause of slightly low voltage like this is that the engine is not running at full operating RPM. Find the high speed adjusting screw on the govenor linkage and adjust the engine RPM until the output is 220V - 240V
You could try sending your question to the Customer service on the Briggs & Stratton Website. Maybe they will be able to explain and suggest a good solution.
I would assume you checked circuit breaker on unit? There should be one over each receptacle (push to reset) and a 2 pole for the twistlok receptacle. Also check to be sure GFCI receptacles aren't tripped. Have you tested the output with a tester? If none of these are the problem , then most likely it is in the generator itself. They do have a 1year warranty (2 year parts)
It depends on the model but most riders have the following;
1. Seat switch
2. Brake pedal switch
3. PTO switch
4. Neutral switch (if its a shift model)
from briggs site: For optimum performance, you should change the oil in your small
engine after the first five hours of use and then annually, or every 50
hours of use (whichever comes first).
Use Briggs & Stratton SAE 30W Oil above 40°F (4°C) for all of
our engines.
Check oil level regularly.
Air-cooled engines burn about an ounce of oil per cylinder, per
hour.
