PS3 Controller mult lights lit on controller

Yes Hello my name is Abrar and I've just brought my son a new PS3 and the controller seems to be malfunctioning, when you first press the PS button on the controller it starts blinking the LED lights and the PS3 system of course turns on then the controller picks two channels to be on. The controller stops blinking the LED lights then the assigned controller number is 1 & 2. The lights stop on the number 1 LED light and number two LED light. Both numbers are lit but not blinking any more. Now when i try to use this controller the PS3 system dosent move at all I press every button on the controller that has two LED lights lit up brightly,and no response is going to the console. I don't get that because how does the PS3 system turn on with the malfunctioning controller but then does not operate the system. Please help me my sons are getting anxious.
