There are a few things that could be causing your washer to fill only and not agitate or spin. The most likely culprit is the timer knob. If the timer knob is frozen and buzzing, it's probably not making good contact with the switch underneath it. Replacing the timer knob should fix the problem.
Another possibility is that the washing machine motor is damaged. If there's a burning smell coming from the washing machine, this is probably what's causing it. You'll need to replace the motor if this is the case.
Finally, it's possible that there's something wrong with the washing machine pump. If the pump isn't working properly, it can cause the washer to fill only and not agitate or spin. You'll need to replace the pump if this is the case.
hi Bill.
The pump may be belt driven, motor driven or have its own electric motor. A burning smell coming from the washing machine during or after the spin cycle can indicate that the drain pump has become seized, preventing it from turning.

well is it a smell of burning rubber? maybe the belt that turns the drum has got jammed. over time these belts get loose and when a full load of clothes are washed the belt slips creating heat hence the smoke..hope this helps..
Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome to the site Joe. Usually, if a washer makes noises during spinning, it means the drive basket is broken. Make sure your pulley's are not sticking and rubbing the belt. This causes the basket to be unstable during the spin cycle. As far as the smell of smoke, try checking the belt and make sure it is not worn or loose. Inspect the motor to check for noises, grinding, or smoke. Your transmission may be burning up. Usually, the cord will remain warm, but not hot. The washer may be working extra if a belt is sticking or during the spinning process. If you have any other questions Joe, just let me know. Thanks for using FixYa.
There's a number of reasons to smell burning after a washing machine cycle. It's a 220V appliance, so if it short's out it will cause problems. It's more likely the motor being overloaded making it hot and causing the electrical burning smell, or a short that's overheating something electrical. Check to see if the belt that spins the whole barrel is melted or worn anywhere. Inspect the wiring that's attached to the system that engages spin, which is different from agitation by the big tower. If these both check out, an trip to the Maytag Man might have to fix overloading motors or relays, or switches, if anything turns up in your search for the source of the electrical smoke. Ozone is what you are smelling, FYI.
do you actually see smoke or is it you have a burning smell
if you have a smell the motor may be overloading on spin
sometimes this is due to too much soap powder in wash
and when machine spins the water cant get away due to soap suds under and around bowl
acts like a brake on motor
try no soap powder in next wash
a good way to tell is that you still have soap in washing if you lift the lid (with no soap powder added)
