not magically, XP is now dead. your PC runs XP or VISTA right
that are both dead now, MS does not support them,
that means if driver goes missing (lots of ways, no need guess them here) but are now gone, your PC cant get them from MS now because they (MS) shut down the PnP servers. (means no drivers)
VISTA went to NO SUPPORT spring 2017, a fact.
its and old PC, why not reload the OS, windows, from you original disks.? or try the F11 key ,at power on (recovery)?

this pc was made in the year 2007, and has some support still.
how lucky you, most this old HP drops support.totally.
HP does not sell install media this old though if F11 fails.

for this PC, but do know that other driver must be good too or the sound chip can fail. (for sure the one marked "chipset")
reload them all but do not do
MODEM or BIOS
try the first 4 on that page. to get sound. working.

do not run XP drivers on Vista that is hopeless as can be.
did you know 99% of the drivers web sites you see
are full of virus or wrong drivers, or both.
do not use those.
use HP drivers.
the chip maker was bought out and no support now.

Not only that but your PC can be virus infected and sound dead is the least of the worries.

compaq is HP so best is to ask them, there, now here.
RTC error mean , the RTC coin cell is dead.
all PCs this old are dead battery ,
RTC= real time clock chip says IM DEAD, but is battery dead ,..

remove the coin cell, and put in a new one.
end story.
then set time .
best is to set time in BIOS setup. 1st.

this Compaq is 18 years old now. or 126 dog years.
id , push it off a cliff on the 4th July with fireworks. and all.

a hopeless case there, no? no support, no books and no updates.
the books at HP are long gone
so now all books are , sold by horders. $$$
it can be costly and dangerous to deal with folks like that.

Go into
control panel, programs and features if using Vista. click on camera
assistant software, should be around 86.9mb. Click on change at the top
and then choose the repair option and this will fix the issue str8 away.

XP right? 2001 to 2007, your PC did not have vista. new.

then you fail to tell what OS is running,
guess what that matters, (we know what it was new but....)
if it's XP and or vista is does, XP is dead now for 4 years.+
and worse IE is even more dead, and now banned on many web sites and is an expanding *****.

did you go to MX owned skype home page and read the minimum requirement there, first?

there are 3 issues here.

1. XP is dead.
2. your XP microphone be died
3. your XP webcam is dead, all very normal now.

as you can see new skype is dead for XP
XP is a virus magnet as is its unsupported IE versions, (all)
note the tight restrictions on w10, wow.

Either the power supply is putting out too low voltage or the power jack is bad.Try moving the ac adapter tip around while its starting up to see if it keeps it running or shuts it off.If it makes no difference try another ac adapter that does work for sure and see if thats the problem.If neither approach works,then the HDD may be seizing or one of the ram sticks may be bad.Some sort of hardware conflict can cause shut downs.You would have to take the bootstrap approach to narrow it down to one pacific component.

One last resort would be to check the power connector at the rear of the laptop,,,if that is found to be connecting ok,,(need a volt meter to test) then i would say you need a new mainboard, time to visit ebay.

Yeah I dont think they are allowed to make xp drivers even if they wanted to. Try getting all the information about your computer as you can, video card, audio card, nic, ect. Then download separate drivers for everything. If things dont work out just go back to vista or linux, (fedora, ubuntu, kubuntu, red hat, ect.) linux is better anyways and its just fun to use.

buddy.. I have the same problem.. HP made lousylaptops which go dead automatically.. I My V3000z was dead.. i claimedit's warranty, but after 1 month of it's return, it went dead again ...for no apparent reason!

However, even though my notebook is dead.. and it has the sameserial number and model number as mentioned in the list, I cannot availthis facility as this offer is valid for USA only.

HP sucks.. I hate them for this. my 800$ notebook is worth 0$ because of their lousy products/services.

have the firmware reflash that should correct the issues.

Check the ac adapter is the proper one for that laptop. Check the power jack is not damaged or loose. let laptop site without battery or power for a few hours. remove battery and retry power. try another ac adapter if that doesn't work, you may have a reset button but not likely to solve the problem. sounds like motherboard is damaged, or something blew.
