CARREN90 – You don’t provide a lot of information, which would be helpful in providing a rational answer to your question. What model KA mixer do you own? How old is it? Is it under warranty? What do you mean by stopped working? Do you mean the motor runs but the agitator doesn’t turn or the motor doesn’t run at all? The more information provided, the better the answer I can offer. That being said, if your KA mixer is less than 20 years old, it might be worth repairing.
First, there are only two reasons it stopped working - an electrical problem; the electric motor or one of it’s components has failed so it is not getting electricity (power) to run; or a mechanical problem – one (or more) of the transmission gears has failed, and although the electric motor may still run, the agitator is not turning in the bowl.

Either problem is fixable; depending on how intimately you wish to get acquainted with the internal workings of your mixer. If you are DITY type person and feel adventurous, and your mixer is not under warranty you can troubleshoot it yourself. Be sure you have the Parts List manual on hand. If you're lacking one, you can download it from the KA website. Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> Enter the 6 character model number select a file under Parts List and then check to see it this matches your mixer model. You can check the disassembly and reassembly of your mixer, along with all the parts. It can be messy but gratifying. Once apart you can check for any other unseemly wear and tear on the gears, etc.
If you feel troubleshooting and repairing is beyond your capability, then I would seek out a local small appliance repair shop in your area. KA Customer Care can provide you names of local KA authorized repair shops in your area, but you can also do an online search to supplement what KA may provide you. Call to explain your circumstances (again the more information you provide the better their answers will be to you) and find out their hourly rate and get an estimate of what they think it would cost to repair your mixer. Also, always obtain three or more estimates – do some comparison shopping. If the estimates exceed the original purchase price, you might consider purchasing a new one, but that is a decision only you can make. Hey, Christmas is just around the corner!!

Good luck, I hope this helps! Howard – Burke, VA

Kitchen Aid flat beater leaves carbon on my hands and food

Are you using the white coated beaters or the burnished beaters. If they are the white coated beaters then the finish has come off and the zinc/underneath is rubbing off. Are you using the aluminum looking beaters in heavy acidic applications? if the mixer is new go to kitchaid customer support they will re-place. if your mixer is out of warranty then you need to replace it. about 15.00 t0 24.00 USD. if the problem persists then you may be leaking metal shavings from the planetary head, (I don't think it is happening but it is a possibility) if it is ground metal shavings you have a serious problem. I can't say anymore without knowing more. What application are you getting this result. is it all the time. is it after the mixer sits along time. need more info.

I have a sunbeam mixmaster from an Aunt that is at least 30 years old and it recently just stopped working. I assume that the motor is blown. Is it possible or worth it to fix it ?

Hi,
If the motor is blown it will most likely cost more to repair or replace the motor than buying a new mixer. However, It could be a break in the electrical cord or at the plug. Is there a 'burnt' smell in the mixer? If not, have the electrical cord checked by someone in the know before purchasing a new mixer.

Please don't hesitate to ask me should you need any more info.

Best wishes,
Graeme.

My kitchaide mixer needs some oil as it is squeaky when it runs

Hi LIZYKAT15, you want grease not oil.
Your KA mixer came supplied with a ‘lifetime’ supply of grease for lubricating your mixers transmission gears. However, over time that grease breaks down and it should be replaced as part of a regular maintenance regimen for your mixer.
Ideally you want to replace the grease in your mixer with a ‘food grade’ grease (although I’ve see people use automotive bearing grease, too – your call.) Unfortunately you can’t just buy a ‘little’ grease, so the best option is to purchase a ‘cartridge’ and you’ll have enough to last you a lifetime of KA mixers. Try this link: http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/greases/ecatalog/N-9iv/Ntt-food+grade+grease?op=search&sst=All to get an idea of the grease available. You don’t necessarily need to purchase from Grainger, but when I fixed my wife’s mixer and needed to replace the grease in her mixer, the grease came from Grainger.
Here are five potential online vendors in no particular order: RepairClinic.com; mendingshed.com; searspartsdirect.com; partstore.com; and Grainger.com. Prices can vary widely between vendors, so do your comparison shopping.
It can be messy but quite gratifying to diagnose and repair your mixer yourself.
Finally, here are some links to several excellent websites that detail the disassembling/reassembly of a KA Mixer. The mixers displayed in the links are different KA models, but the principles are the same.
Between these three websites and their excellent pictures and descriptions and your Parts List manual, you should now be able to completely disassemble and reassemble your mixer. Good luck and have fun. I hope this helps. Howard, Burke, VA

My Sunbeam Heritage MixMaster mixer just stopped running while making cake frosting. Is there a reset button anywhere?

If it is plugged into a circuit protected by a GFCI breaker, which it should be if it is a kitchen circuit, reset the breaker. If you know for sure there is power at the receptacle you have it plugged into, then the power cord is bad or you have an internal mixer problem. You will have to pay someone to repair it or take the mixer apart yourself and find out what is wrong. Before paying someone be sure and get an estimate as to the cost of the repair. In some cases you are better off buying an new mixer as the repair costs will exceed to price of a new one.

Question regarding KitchAid mixer, Model K45ss. excessive noise.

Maeveda, Congratulations on your 30 year old KA mixer! Was it a wedding present? Do you still have the K45SS Parts List? If not, you can download a PDF version from the KA website. Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> Enter the 6 character model number (in your case, use K45SSW select Parts List (1) and then check to see it this matches your mixer). You can check on page 4 & 5 for the disassembly and reassembly of your mixer, along with all the parts. It will be messy but gratifying. Once apart you can check for any other unseemly wear and tear on the gears, etc.
As far as parts go, here are four potential vendors in no particular order: RepairClinic.com; mendingshed.com; searspartsdirect.com; partstore.com (this vendor the best prices for my wife mixer's parts, but sadly they had to back order them, which was disappointing to SWMBO). Prices for the same part vary widely between vendors, so do your comparison shopping. Here's a link to a site that details the disassembly and replacement of a mixer's grease, which might be helpful, too. http://www.foodonthefood.com/food_on_the_food/2009/04/how-to-repair-a-kitchenaid-mixer-yourself.html
Good luck and have fun. I hope this helps. Howard, Burke, VA
