When the TV dose not see any signal feeding it, be it be cable, video, etc. it will go into standby mode, timer is for setting the TV to turn off at a pre setting time, I use this mode when I go to bed and set it to turn off after about an hour so the TV will not be on all night when I fell asleep.

Sony bravia v series 32"

hi,
IT normally happens after factory reset is done. You need to reprogram the channels. Try the auto program (AUTO TUNING) Process.
  1. On your remote commander " Press HOME or MENU button"
  2. Scroll down to " SETTINGS or SET-UP"
  3. Then to "CHANNEL SET-UP"
  4. Select " AUTO PROGRAM " To Auto program your LCD TV and it's done..

My tv shut off by itself & the standby lights flashes 4x in red

The four blink pattern indicates inverter failure. Since there are different inverter boards for this model (depending on the serial number), I recommend that you take your TV to an authorized Sony servicer for repair.
