After I downloaded the driver from the Nikon support page as suggested, and I ran the setup.exe file, I got the message "This software will not run on this machine." I'm running Windows 2000 Professional, SP4. I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and upgrade to XP or Vista.

I have the Nikon Transfer software, and the camera shows up, but none of the pictures on camera appear in the transfer queue. Do I need something else, like this driver I'm reading about? I have a Windows XP machine.

The S51 does not charge via the USB. Connecting the camera to a computer merely drains the battery faster, since the camera has to expend power communicating with the computer (even if it's only to say it has nothing to say).
The S51 comes with an MH-62 charger, which plugs into a wall outlet. This allows you to charge one EN-EL8 battery while using another in the camera.
If you need a charger, you can order one from Nikon at http://shop.nikonusa.com/store/nikonusa/en_US/pd/productID.213504000 or a third-party one for about half the price at http://www.overstock.com/Electronics/Dolica-Nikon-MH62-Charger/3540124/product.html
Hi, For the message that show's on your camera here's is what your need to do.
1. Remove the memory card and check for the physical lock toggle. 2. Toggle the lock on and off. 3. Try blowing on the memory card and the memory card port so it will be cleaned somehow.
here is the picture of the lock toggle of the SD memory card
take the camera into a computers store they should have a cord if not they can order. or try ebay .. you shoukdnt need the cd for the pictures to load on the pc. i have a nikon and have never used the cd . my pc just picks up the camera when its hooked up..
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.
Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive.
