i have the same problem, the inside glass looks to have a film on it and need to clean but dont know how to get apart to do this.

in response to kenhansan, i have tried that and still did not get apart. unlike his thoughts that he had placed in basement and that may have caused it to cloud up, for me, mine is setting in my office and have no idea why it has film on the underside of the scan glass. we all know it has to come apart to clean the glass but how? that is the question to take apart to clean the glass.

wow .....How ironic that I have the same problem as well. My 1600n works great but, there is this cloudy film on the under side of my glass of the scanner. Dell Support was very nice but not helpful. They recommended that I should have a "tech" come out to service it. Yeah for a charge. So I tried to take this printer apart. But to my dismay I could not come close to removing the glass to clean it. If ANYONE can helpme, please lend a hand cause I sure could use it.

    -Thanks, Nate from Hagerstown, MD

Me Three - my scanner glass got cloudy on the bottom (i.e. cleaning the top won't fix it), and I suspect it is because originally I place the printer in my basement, and I think humidity got in and clouded the glass.

I suspect (but can't confirm yet) that to get at the top glass you would need to remove the document feeder (two hinges, each with three screws), then there appear to be two more screws by the hinges that hold the top part in-place.

I plan to try this soon, as if I can't get this fixed, I'll have to put a scanner next to it to scan my documents.

It has to be taken apart, but should not get dirty by itself, it's pretty much sealed. Try cleaning the top again. If not let me know and I will try to find the dissasembly instructions for you.

Severe lines appear on copies. The cartridge is

Most likely it's the toner cartridge. Remove the cartridge, turn it over and slide open the cover over the drum. The drum is the colored cylinder running from one side of the cartridge to the other. Do you see what appears to be the same streaks going around the drum? The drum should be completely clean and free of any lines or streaks. If it has lines or streaks then the cartridge is bad.
Only other possibility here would be the scanner glass. Make sure your streaks don't go away when making a copy from the glass. If they do you could have dirt or trash on your scanner glass.
Good Luck and thank you for using Fixya.

Same Problem with dirty glass 1600n

You will have to remove the back and sides first I'm afraid. But do not fear, this Dell is held together with screws unlike HP that snaps together forever. All you need is some guts and a little experience with computer sockets like inside laptops if you need to do complete disassembly. The tricky part was figuring out that the control panel can be pried up and hinges up exposing the three hidden screws that hold down the glass holder cover.

Document Jam in Dell 1600n

The Automatic Document Feed (ADF) has a white rubber pad that wears out. You can find it by opening the ADF cover and removing the roller bar. Under that is the white rubber pad. Pinch the sides together and the assembley comes out. Contact Dell for the replacement. You may also refer to the Dell 1600n Owners Manual for instructions.

DELL 1600N

If it makes verticle lines only when using the document feeder it is most likely a dirty glass strip over the scanner light bar. If it makes verticle lines in all modes (printing, flat bed scanning/copying, receiving faxes) it could be the fuser or a dirty glass over the laser where ever the laser images to a drum roller (usually a larger green roller). It is possible that this green drum roller is inside the toner - if so - replacing the toner cartridge could fix it. Maybe you could try an old used toner to see of the problem changes - if so - it is very likely that a new toner would fix your print quality issue.

Printer Problem

Clean the small glass strip on the left side of the scanner. There is probably some dirt there and will only show up when using the ADF.

Dell 1600n: Toner marks down the center of the page.

There are 2 seperate glass areas on the top, the large one is for when you lift the cover to scan or copy, the little narrow one is when you use the ADF. If there is a dot or a spec on the narrow part, it will leave the streak on the page, Clean the narrow part really well. I use a foaming window cleaner, and a razor blade.
You may also want to check to see if there are any small scratches on that glass. That will cause the same thing to happen.

Dell 1600n ADF Problem

You have either a piece of dust or a scratch on the scanning glass. This will show up as a line because the paper is pulled across the point.
