Maytag D/W only drains when manually entered into drain cycle

5-year old maytag dishwasher will not drain unless the control is manually turned to the drain cycle. The pump activates and expells all water efficiently.

If allowed to go thru the entire wash cycle unattended, the water from the wash cycle accumulates thru the rinse cycle, floods the floor, and remaining water is left in the pit.

Not draining the water out....

  1. Check for hose kinks or food plugging drain hose. Start at the drain port exit (there are others, this is just an example)
  2. Check the check valve and drain hose for debris.
  3. Check pump motor for reversing during the pump out make sure the dishwasher is pausing between the wash and drain cycles letting the pump/motor reverse for the drain cycle.
  4. Check timer for not letting the dishwasher pause. ( not all dishwashers )
  5. Check pump motor assembly for a drain solenoid, during the pump out make sure the solenoid makes that distinctive "clunk" noise
  6. If you have recently installed a new garbage disposal, check knock-out plugat connection.
  7. Check pump impeller for damage.
  8. Check that the water inlet valve isn't seeping fresh water into the dishwasher when off.
Check to make sure which style d/w you have as outlined above. The direct drive dishwashers have a drain solenoid attached to the motor and pump or a separate drain valve that must be checked with a ohm or voltmeter. The drain solenoid and valve energize and opens the drain port to allow the water to pump out. For a "no drain" problem, always start with the common stuff first...a kinked or clogged drain hose. The drain hose must be checked and cleaned out and if you have to, remove the drain hose(s) to fully check and clean them. Don't forget the drain system sometimes consists of a self cleaning bodythat also can get clogged and stop the dishwasher from draining. If your drain hose needed to be lengthened a hose connector was probably used, these hose connectors are slightly smaller than the drain hose and food bits often get clogged there, also the tail pipe piece that connects the drain hose from your d/w to the house drain is also another popular place to get a clog. On the forward/reversing style of dishwashers that won't drain, make sure the motor is reversing to drain the water out. If the motor does not reverse to drain, the motor, wires ( especially where the doors bends to open and close ) and timer will have to be checked. If the motor is reversing and running, the pump impellor inside the motor and pump assembly may be damaged and is incapable of pushing the water out to drain. If the drain solenoid or drain valve checks ok on the direct drive motor and pump, the impellor inside may also be damaged as mentioned above.
Always check the drain spout under the sink for a d/w that will not drain, also if the Air gas is leaking ( see Fig1A ) this is a clogged air gap or drain and normally not a d/w problem. These are some typical drain hook ups....if you have a drain question, may be a good idea to refer to one of the figures so we all know which style you have :-)

Maytag dishwasher model DWU9906BAX, 15 years old, in the past 6 months we have been finding dirty water in the bottom between uses. We have made sure the 'drain' cycle emptys the bottom after...

This is truly a drain pump fault as it fails to pump out the dirt and water. In a period of time the drain can get choked and so it will not drain out efficiently. so it is best to remove the pump and clean up the drain section which must solve this issue. keep the washer tilted to drain properly.

When refitting, the hose must be tightened properly. If the pump/valve does not work even with power then it must be replaced. If there is intermittent power to the drain valve/pump then the program controller unit is a suspect.

Our year old Maytag Dishwasher...Legacy Series...won't drain, which means it won't run another load

If you have a silver air gap on your counter top start there. It will pull off or turn off, make sure it is clean. Check your drain line to the garbage disposal, All ways run the water near your DW until it is hot. Most people do not do this and it amounts to 85 % Of my calls. Hope this helps.

Maytag dishwasher MDB9100A---tub refills after cycle completed

Problem is actually a water valve that is near the water inlet. Cost is about 35 bucks to fix unless you listen to the guy on here and pay for parts that you don't need and pay them 20bucks for bad advice. Our total cost to fix this $35 dollar problem was an entire wasted Sat, 2 trips to the appliance repair parts place, $130 for the electrical control board that the "wiz" here said I needed--electronic parts and non returnable so we now have a new one that we didn't need.
