It might be cause by a corrupt firmware. You need to have a utility that restore the mp3 player to its original setting. i had exactly the same problem with my ipod shuffle 1st generation 2 years ago. Good thing Apple has that utility for me to download and until no it is still working. Try to visit and upgrade the firmware using this link for you mp3 player http://support.rcaaudiovideo.com/downloads.aspx?product=192

Boot error and formating

Try formatting it in FAT 32 or FAT 16, the player sometimes can't read a different filesystem.
If that doesn't work, try upgrading the MP3 firmware, you can download it from the RCA Website (http://www.rcaaudiovideo.com/)
Follow the steps carefully or you can render your player useless.
After the upgrade, the update program will format the player automatically with the correct filesystem.
