It should read 115v-120v with full load. Yes, you can slow the engine down just a little, depending on the engine, there will be a high rpm adjustment. 130v with full speed, no load, is really not too bad.

Anything over 110v to 135v is fine but you need to keep in mind your HZ. You need a multimeter to set it at 60 HZ. Nevermind the voltage if its between 110 to 135. Setting the HZ (frequency) is more important. set your idle up till it reaches 60 hz or so and then check your voltage. if you cant get both between specs check your burshes.

I purchased a Coleman Powermate 5000 6 years ago: Ser: 94411583. Never really used it for any length of time. Kept for emergency. An electrician checked it for voltage output a short time ago. 240V...

Voltage is adjusted by raising or lowering the engine speed (governor adjustment), however one must also pay attention to the rpm because your generator was designed to produce 120 volts at 60 cycles while turning 3600 rpm. Your electrician should have tested for htz while testing for voltage. I would recommend re-testing under load and adjust governor to turn 60 cycles to see resulting voltage.

I have a coleman generator 5000 and the voltage reader is only going up to 98volts instead of the 120 volts. It is only powering my equipment half way. Is there anyway to fix this? Maybe crank up the rpm's...

That could be your problem the speed of your engine should be 3600 rpm in order to get 60hz.

Go to the link below to find the manual for your generator which should outline how to adjust your govenor.

Let me know how it works for you?

Coleman 5000 generater-no AC output

Try replacing the capacitor. You can buy it from http://www.jackssmallengines.com/do_it_home.html. When you pull off the power end of the generator look at the diodes also. If they look toasted replace them as well

Generator wont put out enough voltage, only get 107 volts, is this a voltage reg. problem

This problem is either that the engine RPM is too low (most likely), or that there is something amiss in the voltage regulation. Get yourself a DMM that measures Hz, plug it into the output and see if you get 61.5 Hz, if not look for the adjustment on the governor spring. On some Powermates this is a screw that pressed on the governor arm, on others it's a little tab the governor spring attaches to that you bend. Do this at no load. FWIW 61.5 Hz is also 3750 RPM of the engine.
