We have a 60 inch philips tv that started to have problem with overexposed color (blue) i thought that i could fix this, i moved the lenses a bit rendomly, that did help a little, but then i touched the black box that has the 6 knobs ,when i did that, it really changed the picture, way too dark, not the right colors..... is there a trick to put it back to normal,i think that i could probably put it back to normal if i had a little guidance, is there a book, or something else that i can get? thanks for your time

Thats the screen controls. To adjust it turn the color level down to zero, Then adjust the 3 knobs by balancing them to where the best black and white picture is acheived. Then turn the color level up and that should do it. Just be careful not to turn the settings too low or the CRTs will refuse to light after the set gets turned off. If that happens you will need to turn each adjustment up a little and the CRTs will relight then you will need to adjust it more. If you cannt get a good black and white picture you will need to replace the Coolant in the CRts.

Does it take some type of gel under the lights, the colors are a little blurry

i also have this tv. i removed backcleaned mirrior, back of screen and lenses VERY GOOD. Then turned on tv go to convergence, sepaerate cross hairs then adjust focus on lenses. Then lenses rotate maybe about a 1/3 turn total by hand. Grab ring that houses lenses and turn until cross hairs are as clear as possible. This can be done with out help by watching inside of screen. red and green are adjustable, the blue is adjustablealso but i couldnt find blue cross hairs, maybe by covering red and green lenses the blue will show on screen. anyway when done and cross hairs are clear, lenses, mirror and screen are clean, you can adjust covergence and get a very clear screencleaning will also brighten pic. Philips 60 inch rear projection screen is wacky!!

Your TV most likely has one or more possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

Philips magnavox 9P6040C104

i just found out why, turn on ur tv and remove back look directly into 3 lenses, if the picture is not nice and clear or looks snowy in all 3 u will not get good color or brightness. I removed my blue tube assembly and took it apart WHILE OUT OF TV. there is cooling fluid between lense and tube, this fluid over time will build a film on the face of the tube and get thick enough to block the tube from projecting picture. (MARK EDGES IT GOES BACK TO GETHERE THE SAME WAY IT CAME APART).Find some new fluid then carefully dissasemble and clean interior of lense, housing and tube thouroughly. Reassemble and fill with new fluid. Do not use old fluid it will be cloudy and snow globe effect. Only do 1 tube at a time this will allow u to realign cross manually as close as possible before u perform convergence. Leave the green for last that is the center and the red and blue are moved to match green. Also be sure to clean mirror and back of screen. Pete

Blue Color spots on all pictures

Call a technician, sounds like an Integrated Circuit problem and would cost you about $250.
