I hooked up everything right modem to router, router to computer. but i still cant get internet to my computer. if i hook my modem directly to the compiter it works fine but not through the router

Some ISPs (Internet Service Providers) limit you to *ONE* unique computer connected through the cable-modem (or DSL-modem).
Turn the cable-modem off.
Turn the router off.
Connect the cable-modem to the router, via an Ethernet cable to the 'WAN' port on the router.
Turn the cable-modem on.
Turn the router on.
Connect, via an Ethernet cable, from one of the 'LAN' ports on the router to your computer.
Restart your computer.
You should be OK.
If not, telephone your ISP, and get them to trouble-shoot from "their" end towards your end.

Getting ip address, but cannot connect to internet through router. I am connected via an ethernet cord. No problems with modem.

Make sure that your computer is able to go online directly through the modem.
If your computer is able to go online through the modem, that means the modem is working fine.
You will need to connect the computer to the router and the modem to the router.
open the set up page of the router and change the settings of the router according to the ISP.

My router flashes DSL, no light on the internet, ethernet and wireless flash together, and power light on. no wired or wireless internet. solution? the afternoon it happened, a lightning storm came thru...

Hey danielbartle,

Since a lighting storm came through there is a good chance your router has been fried.

I would first direct connect via your modem to see if you get a internet connection and rule out your modem as a problem. If that doesn't work I would try another ethernet cord to rule out your cord is a problem. If you get no connection directly through your modem, I would contact your ISP with your problem.

If you get a connection I would then reset the router by unplugging and waiting 30 seconds and plugging it back in.

If still nto succesful I would reset your router to defualt settings by a small button you will find on back.

If none of these work I would head to your local computer shop and pick up a new router.

Thanks for using Fixya!

Netgear WGR614 router with USB Cable Modem

When working with routers, CAT-5 cables are the more usual cable used. Your modem's Ethernet Port --- connect it via cable to the router's WAN input. Connect one of the router's LAN outputs to your computer's LAN input with another CAT-5 cable. Go through the appropriate Router Setup by putting http://192.168.1.1 into your Internet Explorer, with ' admin ' for User Name, and no password (just press Enter in Password frame). Once you are in to the router setup, you can select your Network Name (SSID) and then implement whatever Security you might want to use. You should be up and running by now, nhave lots of fun!

Computer cabled to Dynex enhanced G wireless will not connect

Unplug the router for ten seconds and plug it back in, it needs to reset. Some routers have a reset button. I often wait longer than ten seconds, I find a beer is usually the right amount of time. Sometimes the modem needs a reset also; unplug everything, then plug back in sequence, with the modem first, the wait, then the router, wait, then turn on your computer. That system works for any brand modem and router.

No internet when using router

Your modem has already registered itself with the MAC address of your computer, so it doesn't recognize the MAC of your router. In cases like this you have two options:
  1. Configure your router to clone the MAC of your computer
  2. Connect the router to your modem and do a soft reset so the modem registers itself with the MAC of your router.
Clone MAC - Go to your routers Admin web interface and on the main page you should see the "Router MAC Address" section at the bottom. Select "Use Computer MAC Address" and click "Apply" and your router should reboot and you'll be back in business.

Soft Reset
- Plug the modem into the router via the ethernet cable then do a soft reset.

To do a soft reset, do the following:
  1. pull the power cord from the modem
  2. count to 5
  3. hold down the Reset EMR button on the modem
  4. plug back in the power
  5. count to 30 while holding the Reset EMR button (the modem should be blinking a lot)
  6. release the Reset EMR button and see what happens.

Ethernet vs. usb

FYI for those people trying to use a ethernet and usb cable from a cable modem - it may work for a while but it won't work forever - your ISP will only allow one IP address out of the modem unless you pay for additional addresses (then you need a switch). Each device you have on the modem is fighting for that IP and eventually it will just quit working (if it works at all).

If you want more than one computer on your network (on the Internet or sharing printers/files, etc) then you need a router or a gateway (cable modem/router combo which I DON'T recommend).
