I have a Casio Shock Risist watch (GW-500A) that says "charge" on the display, that is all it shows. Does it need a new battery or what?

This watch requires no battery. It uses solar cells. my watch did this as well. to make the watch functional again my advice is to not wear the watch for one day and place it near a window that gets a lot of sun.

How much is a new battery for a GW-500A? It is solar powered is it common for the battery to need replacement?

The rechargeable batteries last one to three years and must be replaced, cost depends on make and model, so I can't give you a price, but should be easy to find out from the jewelers.

From your description the solar cell charges the battery and keeps it topped up. I think the rechargeable battery is the problem because when the screen goes blank the battery level drops to low and the LCD blanks out which would explain the intermittent operation of the watch. I think it is worth getting it checked out with an estimate.

I have a gw-500a and the battery got replaced with a brand new one, but my watch still says charge and it won't let me change the mode or anything. The time is on the screen though. Please help

You have to reset this watch after battery replacement. Using tweezers or something similar you have to touch the AC & - contact on back of watch, for 2 seconds. Hope this helps.
