Question about Locks & Locksmithing

2 Answers

I need extra keys for my Kwikset handleset. Had new keys cut at 2 different stores and none of them work. The keys fit in the lock, but won't turn either way. Original key turns very smoothly.

When the keys are cut, they look identical. And I tried sanding down the edges too. The issue is that I just replaced the handlesets. We have double entry doors with dummy lever handle and dummy deadbolt on left door and working deadbolt and lever handle on right. So it was impossible to find the duplicate handleset locally (that was identical to original). I bought the sets online and installed myself. So unfortunately no way to get extra keys made at the time of purchase. Eventually I may end up having a locksmith come and rekey the lock and have him make extra keys. Then it's his issue to get the keys to work :-). Thank you for the assistance.

Just find a locksmith with a code cutter, have them read your keys and code cut new ones. Most hardware and bulk retail (home depot) don't train their people how to recalibrate their key machines.

The problem you are having has nothing to do with your lock. Modern key cutting machines are so automated that they do a very poor job in key duplication. I suggest that you find an old hardware store that has an older key machine. Or possibly, it might be cheaper to simply replace the lock set. A new Kwikset keyed entry sells for about $40.00 for a lever handle. Remember to have extra keys cut at the store when you purchase the you can check the duplicates in the store. I do this at Home Depot regularly. They have a new machine, but with the lock right there, they can manage to cut some duplicates after a few bad ones.

Hope This Helps,

Kwikset lockset does not lock

The shaft for the lock fits in the knob. The lock on the knob might be 90 or 180 degrees out of rotation. Please remove the know and twist the lock 1/4 turn and put it back together. Also you may need to reset the location with a key and when the lock knob is off, turn the lock set with the key, then turn it and replace the knob.

Does lockwood and kwikset use the same keys

The popular Kwikset keyway is used by many companies, and will fit into one of Lockwood's keyways. The spacing is a little different, so if you are trying to make locks of both brands work with the same key, double check the width of the cuts while you have the locks apart to make sure the pins you are using will sit on the bottoms of the cuts and not on the slopes of the sides of the cuts.

If you just want to copy a key, then there won't be a problem. Lockwood does have 6 and even 7 pin locks, so make sure your key is the right length.

Kwickset door handle fell apart on my front door help

Kwikset locks are inexpensive because they do not have replaceable parts. Buy a new one.

By the time the lock breaks, it's probably time to get different keys, but if you have so many keys in the hands of people you cannot contact, or you have more than three other locks keyed alike, and you must have the new lock work with the same keys as before, the place where you buy new locks probably has someone who can rekey the new lock to your old keys. Kwikset also sells locks that you can rekey to other Kwikset keys yourself. They are more expensive than other locks of the same type, but could save money long term, especially if you find a need to rekey your locks a lot (lots of visitors, part-time tenants or roommates, your kids lose their keys a lot, etc.)

The lock is bad very common problem with them, If you got 2-3 years out of your "smartkey" lock those things are like dinosaurs most of them don't make it 3 months and this problem happens. Get the traditional pin tumbler version of the Kwikset lock and this will never happen again. Plus it will be an easy swop out since they use the same latch.

Lost entry door key, need to rekey kwikset deadbolt

Unfortunatley you need to have the key to remove the cylinder. You can take it to a locksmith that can pick" it to remove the cylinder and make you a key but it may be more cost effective to replace it.

Sorry not to be mre help.
