This is probably not the technical solution you are looking for but I have a similar problem but i have tried the following it works for some discs. Put the disc in the tray and press close on the remote and do open and close for a couple of times and sometimes it suddenly starts.
I cannot find an explanation as to why this happens but below are my thoughts:
1. The player is old and perhaps the laser unit position is knackered.
2. For some reason the region code lock in the set is not able to recogonise the code on the DVD.
3. Its possessed!

I have been having the same problem with my DZ230 which upto six months ago had been trouble free, completely reliable and I have loved it!... this problem with reading disc's has gotten gradually worse and now it has almost stopped alltogether! If anyone else can shed any light on to this I would be most gratefull> Mark
