We bought the Kenmore Elite Trio refrigerator just over one year ago. Recently we have had trouble with our water line. Green algae-like like material has been coming out of the water dispenser. We replaced the filter and it did not solve the problem. I image that we have something in the line itself. Is their a way to flush the line with some type of cleanser? Any ideas on how to solve this problem would be greatly appreciated.
If it is using clear plastic tubing from the sink make sure than line is totally behind cabinets and not exposed to light or sun. That will guarantee algae.
Never heard of this before. First I would check the warranty, and try to get someone from the factory service. Does it sit for long periods of time in sunlight? I guess you can try removing the filter and adding bleach before putting it back. You wouldn't want to drink it, obviously.
I'm having the same problem with a Kenmore Elite side by side Refrigerator: the Sears technician told me that there is a flaw on where the filter is located, which causes this problem. As he told me, the filter takes out the chlorine from the water in the refrigerator, but since the filter cleans the water at the beginning of the line, this gives it enough time to produce bacteria (he said he's been told this is the "good" kind of bacteria...although he wouldn't drink it). Anyhow, he offered 3 solutions: 1) run the refrigerator for 2-3 months without a filter and let the chlorine in the water clean the lines...2) change the water lines for $250 (this fixes the problem, but temporarily)...3) put a new water line that would go through the filter, but it will not sit on the dispenser (therefore it won't be cold)...anyhow...seems like this is a manufacturer's problem and I can't believe there is no recall on this...
