Question about Canon PowerShot A710 IS Digital Camera
I have a problem in my digital camera. A message shows "Memory card error" when I open my digital camera. Is it possible for me to retrieve all the pictures from the memory card?
The card error may be caused by several problems:
1. some minor electrical problem - turn the camera off, remove battery, wait several minutes, put back battery and turn camera on, see if it works. Proceed to next step to clean card contacts just in case.
2. Card not contacting with camera slot very well - remove card, put it on table with gold contacts facing up, use a cotton tipped stick with some ethyl alcohol (not alcohol drinks!) or isopropyl alcohol (many cleaning solutions like magnetic head cleaners) to thoroughly clean each contact. Avoid spilling and leaving drops on the card. Dry the card well before inserting it again. Never use water or other cleaning solutions or you'll ruin your card.
3. Card became defective: try card on another camera and/or card reader (many laptops have a SD card reader built in). If not working, discard card and sorry for your loss. If card works somehow, download everything useful and try to format it to see if it's working OK. Try to fill it up with some files and copy them back too some temp folder just to see if it's writeable and readable.
!!! In case the card seems to work, but your pictures are not there (card is empty or contains garbage) you can try to use TestDisk (http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk) - it's the best picture undelete program and it's free. Of course you should try to recover your data BEFORE testing the card with formatting, writing etc.
!!! Always format your card in the camera after tinkering with it on a computer! Camera format is not the same as format from the PC.
I hope you retrieve your data.
