I assume when you say you want a modem, it's because you want a wired connection to the internet. Your HomePortal already has an integrated ADSL modem, and it will not be possible for you to add another one to your line.
If you want a wired connection to the internet, you can either run ethernet cable from the HomePortal downstairs, or you can use a wireless bridge like the
SMC EZ Connect g. (There are several brands of adapters that are marketed especially for gaming consoles, but they function similarly to the non-gaming bridges.) The instructions included with the equipment will tell you how to enter the necessary security information for your network.
Also, if you'd like to avoid switching the cable connection every time you move between the X-box and the computer, you can run the wireless bridge into a
small network switch, and then plug both items into that. (This would also work with the cable from downstairs if you choose that route.) This gives the added advantage of allowing simultaneous access by both machines.
