I have exactly the same problem. In any shooting mode when i turn on the camera it turns on for a second then turns straight off again.

I have 2 of these cameras (I run workshops with young people) and they both do exactly the same.

I have upgraded the firmware but it made absolutely no difference to the problem.

Okay, now I'm gonna bring life to this discussion again...

I have the exact same problem: When I turn the Nikon Coolpix 3100 on it just turns off immediately. I use two AA-batteries. I've tried to change them several times but it makes no difference.

What should I do to fix this problem?

I would really appreciate some help with this because on Monday I'm going on a one week camping-trip with some friends, and it would be nice if I could take some pictures then...

I solved the problem (at least for my own sake).

I wasn't using Nickel Metal Hydride batteries... How smart of me....
Anyway, it's working for me now.

I was having this exact problem until someone pointed out to me that the camera's CRV3 batteries can be replaced with simple double A's. I'm sure the manual says this but I must have overlooked it. Anyway, the problem seems to be fixed. The camera works as if new!! I haven't tested it for any long period yet but the regular day to day photography that I have done gives me hope that the problem has been solved.

Hi Cliveo,
I read your post because my Nikon Coolpix 3100 had the same problem last week. Despite being in perfect condition, it turned on and off immediately afterwards. It did it for several days (I was a bit slow to get on the internet! ;o) and today I left it in the sun... and it seems to work!
Not sure what happened, maybe in my case it might have been some condensation because I took it out on a cold day, but I will keep it monitored.
It still seems to "eat" batteries, though...

You may be experiencing a common problem with some early Mfg 3100s.
There is a firmware update you can get from the manufacturer which will greatly improve battery function on the early 3100s.

Nikon Coolpix 3100 will not turn off or lense retract

Try removing the battery from the camera to see if this will force a reset. This may well resolve the problem.

If your problem persists after this please do add a comment and I try to assist further.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Lens error message on nikon coolpix L18 I purchased my Nikon L18 Cool Pix camera last September ('08). Last week when I turned it on, the lens extended fully, then retracted fully as I got a "lens error"...

When system control does not get lens initialize signal while extending it, then it try again by folding it and extending and still no required initialize signal then generate error and stop further functions.

Please remove battery and open camera and remove flexible wire of lens mechanism from connector, there would be lock that needs to release to remove flexible wire. Clean wire terminals with alcohol, let it dry and put back flexible wire in connector and lock it. Now put battery and power camera up, hopefully lens will work properly.

I have a Nikon Coolpix 3100 and when I turn it on the flash indicator light and the light next to AF flash. Nothing else happens. I've put in new batteries and it still isn't working.

This indicates a lens fault. Either something is preventing the lens from coming out or the mechanism has already been damaged.

Unfortunately the damage isn't worth repairing as a perfectly good, boxed and virtually unused Coolpix 3100 can be bought on auction sites for under £25. The parts you'd need to repair your camera would cost more than that (in the unlikely event that you could get them) and would need professional fitting.

Wont turn on but light is blinking

Are there any error messages on the LCD display?

Will the camera lens stay out when the camera is turned on?

Can you still take a photo/flash/sound without seeing the photo?

If the camera will not turn on even with a fresh set of batteries it could have a system or lens error in the camera.

a possible lens jamb when closed and the green led on top comes on then shuts off after the lens attemps to extend but cant.

Nikon coolpix 4600.

Hi I found this info on the Nikon Australia website:

"System Error" or "Lens Error" message in LCD monitor trnsp.gif Question My COOLPIX camera displays a "System Error" or "Lens Error" message. What should I do? trnsp.gif Answer Having a "System Error" or "Lens Error" message displayed on the camera's LCD monitor would generally indicate that your camera needs servicing. A System Error is a general error which can be caused by many things: lens problem, CF Card problem, general camera failure, etc. To troubleshoot, please try the following:
  1. Use the memory card that originally came with your camera (or a Nikon approved card).
  2. Remove and replace the battery.
On the other hand, a Lens Error generally means that an error has occured during the lens operation. To troubleshoot, please try the following:
  1. Turn off the camera.
  2. Remove and replace the battery.
  3. Turn on the camera.
If the above tips do not help, your camera must be sent to our Nikon Authorised Service Centres, there are no user serviceable parts in our Nikon COOLPIX cameras. We apologize for any inconvenience caused and we will do everything to repair your Nikon camera as quickly as possible. Click Here for our Nikon Authorised Service Centres details.

Seems you may just have to remove and replace the battery - sort of like a Windows Restart to fix a computer problem! - this would reset your camera's memory.

Hope this helps.

Nikon Coolpix 2100/3100/3200 battery compartment door latch broken (again)

I just purchased a new battery door for $15 with shipping from nikon. They sent a simple assembly diagram and I was able to replace the door in 30 minutes. I used a dremel to cut the old door off, but you dont have to do that. I got a little impatient.

Just buy the plastic piece and u can reuse the metal parts for your old battery door.

Nikon coolpix L4 won't take pictures & turns off

I have the same camera & personally, I hate it. My camera does that all the time, sometimes, it takes a while for the picture to actually take. Try holding down the button for a while, that's what I have to do with mine. The camera sucks up all the battery energy with only a few picture takes which I really don't understand. I think that's also why it's cutting off while you're using it. Does the phrase, "Warning: Batteries exhausted" sound familar, especially right before the camera shuts off? Oh, & before I go, my personal advice to you is: Get a new camera. I don't even know why I bought mine, soon I'm getting a new one. Yay. I hope this helped you, sorry about the camera problems. Much luck! :D
