I have a pair of Motorola Talkabouts T5725 in which I replaced the batteries with brand new 2x3 AA Duracels. Although the display lights up fine, the units cannot send messages to each other. Both are on the same channel, and I've tried different paired channels but to no avail. Are the units repairable? or do the batteries have to be original motorola parts? Tom

I have a pair of FR60 Talkabouts. I have not used them in a few years. After putting in fresh batteries, one is fine. The other is indicating "low battery" by the red flashing light next to the...

There's a good chance that your problem is due to corrosion buildup on the radio's battery contacts. Even if you can't see and buildup, wipe the contacts firmly with dry cloth, the reinsert the batteries and try the set again. If you can see a heavy buildup on the contacts, you may need to clean them with a fine wire brush, steel wool, or fine sandpaper. Be sure to remove any residue from the cleaning before you install the batteries.

One radio not recieving

You need to check your interference eliminator code. It sounds like they are not set to the same code. Also, if your radio has a Qt filter, set it to zero.

Here's a link to the manual http://www.giantintl.com/RadioPDFs/Outdated%20Manuals/T5300_T5400_User_Manual_E.pdf

Motorola talkabout t5700

No, the charger is only usable to charge the rechargeable NiMH or Li-Ion battery which comes with the radio. Attempting to charge Alkaline rechargeable batteries with this charger could cause the to expode. If your charger is not charging the batteries which came with the units, it could be you do not have the charger cord end plugged in all the way, or the batteries dropped below the initial charge level by setting on a store shelf too long. Most TalkAbouts come with a cradle style charger to hold the radio, and a possible plug to plug into the charge hole. Check all connections, and clean any battery/charger contacts with a pencil eraser. To re-initialize the batteries you would need to attempt 3-5 charge cycles by charging for 8-10 hours, then letting the battery rest for 8-10 hours, repeating 3-5 times as needed. If this does not bring the battery back to life, you need to replace the batteries.

No transmition

You can find the manual here http://www.giantintl.com/motorolafrsold.htm by using the menu to select your radio model.

You most likely will need to program your radios to match one another. Pay special attention to the interference eliminator code and the the Qt filter (if any). Both radios must match perfectly to communicate.

Will not turn on. Other 1 works fine. New batteries. Radio like new, little use.

Ted, I have pondered your dilemma. When you say the radio is "dead as a door nail", are you saying it will not power on at all? If so, the problem has to be with the battery or battery connection. This radio is not a repairable radio, and there would be nothing about the circuitry inside which would be user repairable. I do think your solution might be much easier.

If you are using a rechargeable model T5725, you can try a simple test to check the charge capability of the radio. Plug in the charger to the charge port and turn the radio on. If the radio does NOT power up, then you have a battery contact problem. If the radio does power up when using the charger, but not without it, then you have a battery problem. IMPORTANT NOTE: DO NOT transmit or push the PTT while the unit is plugged into the charger. This can cause serious damage. We are only recommending this as a test of the power system.

Other thoughts concerning power would be check your battery to see it is in the correct direction. Check the contacts to see if they are clean. If not, use a pencil eraser to clean them.

If this does not help, post again with more information.

The talkabout t5500 and the t5725

Hello bella-9,

The T5500 is a 2 channel radio and the T5725 is a 14 channel radio. However, the radios should be compatible with each other on FRS channels 1-14 as long as both radios are using the same Quiet Talk code. If the Quiet Talk settings are different the radios will not be able to communicate with one another.

Assuming all settings are the same (as you say) and the units are within range of each other (typically less then a mile over clear, level terrain) they should work just fine.

Best Regards,
Ken
