I have a Canon ZR 50mc DV video camera that I have not used in about two years. I decided I wanted to dust it off (figuratively speaking, it's been in a case) and use it again, but I can't get it to work right.
I don't know exactly how to describe the problem I am experiencing except to say that when I try and record, it will look fine through the viewfinder but then when I play back about a 1/3rd of the viewable area is this solid gray colour. The other 2/3rds of the frame works fine but obviously this is now good. Any ideas what is wrong? I bought a head cleaner and ran that through but it doesn't seem to be helping. any help is appreciated.

Flexwire in electronic viewfinder (EVF) is broken, you need pro fix.

Hello, I would take them in for repair, If you try to do it your self, you may never get them back togeter. they will give you a price to fix them, but you may be better off with a new one.

Ok, I've figured my one out. Funny thing was, a cleaning tape didn't help at all, but when I took the battery out (to save frying the camera) and sprayed electronic component cleaner directly into the area where the tape goes and let it dry, the camera worked properly after.

There is a well known, but little publicised problem with CCDs on many cameras. Ther was a manufacturing problem in the components. Visit the Canon web site and look up the problem. They will tell you where to send it for free repair
This is usually caused by a failed component in the power circuit within the camera and can usually be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it's not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired qualified service technician.

This is usually caused by an oxidized or defective Audio/Video drum. Try running a cleaning tape through the camera. If this does not solve the problem the camera will need to be repaired qualified service technician.
