Has the memory card ever worked in this camera? If yes, try downloading all the pictures to your computer then format the memory card using the camera setip menu. If this is a new camera, Make sure the camera can use the SD HC type memory cards. Some older cameras cannot read the SDHC but are fine with the SD cards.
The manual states that you should format your card when you see this error. If the card has been externally formatted use the camera to format the card,
To format, set your selector dial to play (green), push the up button to get to the second screen, select format (right), slect "YES" when given "DELETE ALL MEMORY ON THE CARD"
