Hello and thank you for using Fixya's services.

You can take the actual hard drive out of the casing and slave it to a working desktop. You can then retrieve your information and use the computer to reformat the HDD. After this put the HDD back in the casing and try to attach to computer. If it doesn't read, then more than likely the USB connection or casing is messed up. You can always keep it slaved to desktop and continue to use, except now it will be internal and not removeable.

Hope this helps!

Failure to recognize CD ROM or USB ports

  1. Run Registry Editor (regedit).
  2. Navigate to the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UsbStor
  3. In the right pane, double click on the Start value name.
  4. Change the value data to 4 to disable the removable USB mass storage device drive access
  5. 5.
  6. To revert and re-enable the drive access for removable USB mass storage device driver, change back the value data for Start to its original default of 3.
The change will take effect immediately to block any USB mass storage device such as USB flash drive, USB key and portable harddisk from been used in the system, while still allowing hardware components to work properly via USB connection. The hack works in most Windows operating system such as Windows Vista, XP, Windows Server 2008, 2003 and 2000.
For user who dare not to modify the registry manually, simply download the following registration entries file to enable or disable the USB drive. Extract the downloaded content in .ZIP format, and then double click on the .REG file to open and apply or merge the registry values to system.

I have a Kingston 2.GB Data Traveler filled with data, and no instructions on how to open it to read it. Please tell me how to open. Thank you.

Your USB drive should show up under My computer. Double click on my computer and look for an icon that says something like mass storage device. The drive should be E: or above. If you double click on that icon, everything saved to the drive should show up just like any other harddrive. You can drag items to or from this drive.

USB Drive no longer responding

Ok,

So it wasn't obvious damage then lets do the next step, Right-Click on My Computer, then select Manage, when the MMC opens select Device Manager on the left side, Open USB Devices and look for USB mass Storage controller. If it is not there then it's likely the controller board in the Verbatim shell is dead.

If that is the case, your best bet will be to drop by a local computer store and purchase an empty HDD enclosure to move the drive into.

If it does show up as a USB mass storage controller but not as a drive the problem is more likely in the circuitry of the HDD itself and you may require the assistance of a data recovery pro.

HDD error, full disk, camera temp is too low

I have had success with this... Download the camera recovery software called asoftech data recovery
http://www.asoftech.com/adr/

You have to use a card reader either on your computer or an external USB card reader. Put the card in the card reader, open the recovery program, then select the drive where files are deleted, then press "Start" and wait for it to do it's magic.

Master hard disk s,m,a.r.t.status bad, backup and replace

A failure message from the SMART system of this nature indicates that a catastrophic hard drive failure could be imminent. Without delay, back up ANY data you want to keep. This error isn't going to go away, and is being reported by the drive controller.

Whilever you can access the drive, move any data you want onto another media (such as DVD or external USB hard drive) because chances are it's not going to work much longer. You need to look at buying a new hard drive as soon as you possibly can, and migrating the data to it.

Files and Settings Transfer Wizard will be able to backup your data to another media.
