Your pc may be trying to display on an external monitor try pressing Fn and F5 on your keyboard at the same time. It may be neccasary to do this several times.

Apparently you can see something, as you were able to install a screen saver. In this case, go into the control panel and check the "power options" to see if by chance the screen is set to go to black in 5 minutes. If so, change the value. If this is not the problem and you can't brighten the screen with the screen controls, try an external monitor to see if the video is OK. If it is, then you are looking at the power supply or the flourescent bulb in the monitor being bad.
if you're not plugged in your laptop may be doing power management by lowering the brightness. If you are plugged in could you provide some more information?
