Cannot get past opening screen or turn off unit. Unit seems frozen

I was connecting to wi fi when unit turned off. I turned it back on but it cut off again shortly. Another attmept to turn it on resulted in the blue Hp iPaq screen coming on but nothing further. I cannot turn it off, get past this page. I disconnected battery for short time. Same result. Disconnect several minutes. Same result. Plugged into ac charger, usb port on laptop. same result. The battery locks are secure, battery charged.
Did soft reset and hard reset but no help.

    Nitrotrike,

It did have a Sandisk 2 GB card in it when it went down, I took it out and tried as well, same problem.

    OS is WM2003

  • johnmoses Jan 11, 2008

Don't mean to sound stupid, but I downloaded the updates you suggested to laptop. Cannot Sync with 4700 to send the updates there.

  • johnmoses Jan 11, 2008

I do have Activesync and was using it daily before this problem occurred. Since the pda froze I cannot sync with the laptop. It does not find the device. By the way, I really appreciate your help. I am going out of town this weekend on business and was really counting on using this pda. (I did grab the beer)

  • johnmoses Jan 11, 2008

I tried this link but no good. I was able to sync up thru this morn. The problem now is that the pda is locked/frozen and will not go past HP page. I cannot make it sync because it is unresponsive.

  • johnmoses Jan 11, 2008

    Otacon,
I downloaded the BIOS and also ROM (?) onto laptop. The problem is that the pda is frozen.I cannot make it reset, sync, download etc. The only functions I can perform are; doing a soft reset turns screen on in subdued grey but only displays HP iPaq screen. If I hard reset I get this same screen but in color. The power button will turn screen on in grey, but will not power off. The Flash mode series resulted in the screen powering up and then powering off when I release the buttons.

  • johnmoses Jan 11, 2008

I did get some reaction here. At the top of the screen it offers:
    boot options;
enable kitl no (this line is highlighted)
clean registry hive no (not highlighted)
    format storage no (not highlighted
Touching any of these does not get any reaction

  • johnmoses Jan 11, 2008

Don't know if it makes a diffrence or not, but I do not have a cradle. I am conection thru USB to pda direct.

  • johnmoses Jan 11, 2008

I was able to press 4buttons and have device turn off. I then connected with USB cable and proceeded with the rest of the process. When it tried to run the BIOS on the pda, the message was given that it was not connected thru activesync. I tried to connect to activesync, but it would not locate the pda.
Questions: How do I know if I am actually in flash mode?
Why would it matter if it is a cradle or cable? They both serve as a power source and data transfer correct?

  • johnmoses Jan 11, 2008

I was also able to push 4 buttons, get bright blue screen with the above options. I was able to toggle by using the ITask button and the calendar button to turn all otions on. Then I can't get it to do anything else. I tried a soft reset and simply got the HP page in subdued grey.

  • johnmoses Jan 12, 2008

After following the previous suggestions, I still cannot connect the pda to laptop to download the new updates

  • johnmoses Jan 12, 2008

Sweet Rascal, How do you recommend restoring factory settings? Please explain in steps.

  • johnmoses Jan 12, 2008

It seems to be at a stand still here, but I still need help.

  • johnmoses Jan 12, 2008

Hard reset was done 2 days ago. I appreciate your help, but please read what has already been done. This pda is locked and soft resets, hard resets dont change the screen. Flash mode resets change the screen (refer to above post about "boot options") but still don't allow me to connect the pda to the pc.I have downloaded the BIOS and ROM updates and tried to install them but the pda does not connect to the pc thru activsync because it is locked up.

If none of the reboots work and you still need to put it back to factory settings try removing or replacing the internal back up battery. I have provided a link which will show you step by step on how to accomplish this. GOOD LUCK! Sounds like you have tried every other option.

To do a hard-reset which is what you want, you press the two outter
hardware buttons (Calendar and iTask), hold them down and poke the hole
in the back with the stylus and hold it until the screen in the front
completely fades to black, then release the buttons and poke the hole
    once more and you're set.

Hi,

Did you try to flash the BIOS/firmware of your device?

1.) Go to the Master Index of BIOS, FIRMWARE, & DRIVER Updates,
2.) Select the appropriate hyperlink for your model. (in your case it's here http://mobilitytoday.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4846)
3.) Download the most recent BIOS version SoftPAQ (SP) for your Model of iPAQ.
4.) Press the POWER + iTASK + CONTACTS + RESET buttons at the same time so as to enter the FLASH Mode
5.) Make sure your USB connection to the Cradle is hooked-up.
6.) Place your iPAQ in the USB Cradle.
7.) Stop the MS ActiveSync session on your HOST PC: CTRL-ALT-DELETE > TASK MANAGER > PROCESSES.
8.) Hilight WESCOMM.EXE and select "End Process" button.
9.) Run the file you downloaded from HP in step 3.
10.) The iPAQ should now begin Flashing the iPAQ's ROM BIOS

Pressing those four buttons doesn't put the device in flash mode...so as long as you hold it down it doesn't power off? Hmmm...get someone to help you and keep all those buttons pressed and put the device in the cradle and see if it connects.

  • Damen Wong
    Damen Wong Jan 11, 2008

So you press the four buttons and you get to a screen with options. And when you let go of the buttons, it turns off? I think the cradle is needed to flash the device.

    Damen Wong Jan 12, 2008

I am sorry but I suspect your unit's ROM has malfunctioned. You need to get the device serviced.

  • Damen Wong
    Damen Wong Jan 12, 2008

That is why it can't turn on or even be flashed. The device simply just can't access it due to it's malfunction (it can once in a while - since you said that you managed to sync once).

If still no Wi-Fi and you're trying to connect to your home Wi-Fi The password is on the back of the modem in the house, Write it down then go into your phone/tablet settings and tap "CONNECTIONS", Then tap on Wi-Fi and make sure it's switched on(should be a button there), Once switched on it should start scanning automatically for networks, but if not then there's a scan button there somewhere. So, you can't connect to your Wi-Fi network at home?

First, try turning the router and phone off, wait for a couple of minutes, then turn both back on again.

Oh, and, if the Wi-Fi network's saved in your phone, you might try deleting it first.

Hope this helps!

If you have client devices, such as wireless adapters, that

use Wi-Fi Protected Setup to automatically

To use Wi-Fi Protected Setup, run the Setup

Settings” section of “Chapter 3: Advanced
Configuration".

Wi-Fi Protected Setup LED (Blue/Amber) It
lights up blue when wireless security is
enabled. The LED flashes blue for two
minutes during Wi-Fi Protected Setup.
The LED lights up amber if there is an error
during the Wi‑Fi Protected Setup process. Make
sure the client device supports Wi‑Fi Protected
Setup. Wait until the LED is off, and then try again.
The LED flashes amber when a Wi‑Fi Protected
