Have you removed the rear door and inspected that area as well?
That is referenced at this link.

I am merely here to assist you to the best of my ability. If you could please answer the questions I ask so that i can properly assist you then it would make everything a lot easier. I would be more then happy to assist you. I am not sure what it is your expecting here. This fax machine is how old? It is not worth the money to repair if the problem persists as this would mean there is an internal defect/broken sensor in the fax machine. Being that you can get the latest hp fax machine for around 50$. You will want to troubleshoot as much as possible from there you will want to replace. That is the way technology works these days. It is cheaper to replace then repair. As I mentioned before ther are sensors with actuators that break or a very small piece of paper could still be stuck and is triggering the sensor. A flashlight and close inspection is all you can do. These things can be broken pretty easily. Unfortunately there is not always an abra cadabra magic fix. if you need any further assistance please let me know.
Thank you,
Lee
