The gears maybe going out. Sometimes it is able to engage in the other direction which the spin, sometimes not. Washing machine have complex gears that in one way agitator works, and the other the gear locks to turn the whole tub. The clicking noise is probably the locking mechanism in the gears that has caused the whole intermittent problem.
Hi,
A loud popping noise could be a fault in the electrical capacitor (aka condenser) near where the power comes into the machine.
Disconnect it from the power and see if there are any black steaks or burn marks on the outside of the capacitor. Not too expensive to fix if you can do it yourself.

This machine uses an electric water pump. I would check to motor. Remove the front panel and operate the machine to see if the motor is working. Check this by listening to the motor and watching the belt. If you hear the motor but the belt does'nt move then there may be a problem with the pulley or motor clutch assy.
As far as not draining or pumping water ? Check the wiring from the pump to the control panel. If these wires are alright then i suspect the pump.
Most likely your outlet filter of the machine is choked with dirt or something; clean out the filter & refit. Of course after taking of the wall plug & siphoning out the water from washer.
