If the timer light flashes while waiting for the picture and once the picture appears if it looks like the colors are out of balance and the edges of the picture are out of focus then yes time to let it go. The issue at that point will be the picture tube itself is very weak and would need to be replaced. In most cases the CRT's are no longer available. Please take a few moments to rate my response. Thank you..

How old is the TV?
Sony Trinitron sounds like it may be from the 1980's?
Some TV engineers can use a piece of equipment to do a "tube boost" but this is sometimes risky and can completely ruin the tube, but it's a risk you would have to take.
If the TV is over 15 years old, and has been used regularly, (like 4 hours every day or more) it seems likely that the tube has reached the end of life.
TV cathode ray tubes are like light bulbs...they do not last forever!

What`s seems to be the porblem

IT SOUNDS LIKE THE VERTICAL I.C. NEEDS SOLDERING. WHEN IT LOOSES THE PICTURE DOES IT HAVE ERROR CODE 2 ? THE RED LED BLINKING 2 THEN 2 THEN 2. THAT IS LOSS OF VERTICAL. IF YOU SMACK THE SIDE OF THE SET.(NOT TO HARD) WITH OPEN PALM ON LOWER BACK IF THE PICTURE COMES BACK IT IS THE VERTICAL IC THAT NEEDS TO BEE SOLDERED.

Help with sony trinitron problem

Are you serious? You have used that television... in particular that CRT well beyond its predictable lifetime.  Congratulations.  Those are early symptoms of CRT failure.  Your screen may turn green very soon also.  It will occur any moment now.  It is not cost-effective to repair.  Welcome to the next generation.  You will be amazed and delighted with LCD, plasma or DLP technology.
