I have not used my sony pd170 for a while and when I switched it on it shows a Red picture with vertical lines. You cant see any picture but does go darker when you put a hand over the lens.

dear first tell me when u close the lcd pannel , then is the view finder working fine , if not then view finder cable is broken . u cant fix it your self as u need to open the camcorder .you must not be having the proper tools for that. and regarding the lcd part , if the display is fine for a while ..and then while using it it goes fade , shows grey colour or lines in it . then its lcd problem ...ur lcd need to be replaced .

Theproblem that you are experiencing with your Sony PD170 sounds that its just normal settings u just press the button on your handle where the red light blinks when we are recodring, when you will press that button the option would blink in your lcd screen ,then turn that off .and then CP i.e, coustom preset option would disappers from the lcd.
There are 2 types of lines they may be showing, both requiring the replacement of the LCD Panel.
1. Delamination Lines- they are usually multiple vertical lines that do NOT flow from the top to bottom of the screen. Looks look water dripped down or something similar
2. Single/Multiple Vertical lines - This is normally 1 or maybe a few solid vertical lines that travel from Top to bottom. I belive in some cases they may only travel to the screen center.
In both cases, this will always show when the TV is ON. Even if there is no signal being input to the TV. There are other possibilities but these can be the most common. Both require a new panel.
The resistor (r9335) on the blue crt base board is open and burned thats why the 200v is missing. replacing the resistor will solve the problem. cheers!
