I am looking to upgrade the processor of my acer T180 from AMD Athlon 64 to a AMD Athlon X2 5000+ or 5200+ Dual Cores to get better performance.

Question: Do I need to update my Phoenix Tec ver R01-B3, 2/7/2007 Bios? .... and if I do, how do I perform the update?

    Thanks!

Hmm you might need to flash the bios or reset the bios follow these instructions.

TO RESET BIOS
1.) unplug the computer system
2.) remove the side panel

now you have two option
OPTION 1
3.) locate the jumper jp1 or jcmos1 you can use your manual for a refrence its a 3 pin jumper located cloase to the battery
4.) the jumper is currently on 1 and 2 , set it to 2 and 3 wait a few seconds and set it back to 1 and 2
5.) THATS IT BIOS PASSWORD RESET
6.) boot system enter setup and load optamised defaults.
7. save and exit setup

OPTION 2
incase you cant find the jumper

4.)remove the battery
5.)press the power button 5 times to empty any charged capicators

I want a dual core processor upgrade

You listed this under PC Laptop? It's a Desktop? Have you ever done a CPU upgrade? You are limited to what will work with your machine, Mobo and other components. Your Mobo is, of course, AMD compatible, so if you read the specs: http://support.acer.com/acerpanam/desktop/0000/Acer/AspireX1200/AspireX1200sp2.shtml The AMD Athlon X2 dual-core is best option. Memory is a easy option to increase speed a bit. Remember, with a 32bit OS the most memory it can use is 3.80 GB's More or Less. With a 64bit OS use more. I have done many CPU upgrades, you may not get the Speed/ processing increase you expect. After all, the components work in conjunction with one another. Do your research on Socket type, Pins, Power requirments, etc., etc.Check, Verify, then re-Check and re-Verify. Use this little freeware program to assist you, it list Spec info in detail, SPECCY at: http://www.filehippo.com/download_speccy/.

Ast180-ua381b buy which replacement motherboard

If you want to rep[lace teh motherboard ..you have no limits ..basically the only thing that limit your choice ...are the devices from teh old board you planing to use on the new one ..
So ..if you are planing to use the CPU ..you have to get a board with the same socket..but I would not recommend it unless you have a fast cpu ..and you know it is working ..
So ..if you are not limited by the cpu socket ..the only thing to look is to have buses for your hard drive and disk drive ..(so if you have the hdd on sata ..you need at least one ide bus for the dvd drive ..and the most important to have slots for the memory you have ..If your ram memory is on ddr2 ..pay attention for the frequencies ..It may not support ddr2 on 800 if you get a board that only uses on 533 or 667 ..but will work the otehr way around..If you have ddr2 on 533 will work on a board that works with 6667 and 800 mhz ..
the rest is not that important and will work ...be sure you have at least a 300W power supply ..or even larger if you are planing on using a fast video card ..
..So ..like I said ..the CPU socket ..and the ram memory used are the only limits ..real ones..the others..are usually supported well on any board with same slots ..

I wanted to get my acer aspire T180-UA381B upgraded, and I know very little about computers, how much and what kind of ram should i put in to make it run fast

Based on your memory specs below the maximum RAM that you can install in your computer is 1GB
DDR2 SDRAM and you can get 1GB RAM for like $15 -$ 20. 1 GB DDR2 SDRAM is what you need to buy.

Your Memory Specs:

Processor upgrade

Need to look at the motherboard specs along with the processor "Socket". It will usually be a 754 or 939 depending on what your motherboard says. I wouldn't try too fast and set yourself up for disappointment. I would upgrade the RAM before the processor.

Acer Aspire T-180 Memory Upgrade question

Hello, You might be able to add 2GB more. 1GB per slot. You need to get the model # off your motherboard and verify what the maximum amount of memory it will support. 1GB per slot would be 4GB total but some Operating systems will only support 3GB. So some might be wasted if that is the case. You would need to use the same memory type. So if existing is PC2-4300, use the same. Hope this helps.
