I have the same problem. Lots of power failures this week due to high winds. I think that's what caused the clicking. Any ideas what other solution there may be? The power button fix didn't work for me. Thanks in advance.

Bought 2 of these drives not 3 months ago. Shot a short film - Used 1 as a backup. After less than a month started having the same problems. Every other time they were unreadable and were clicking. Lazy703's solution worked for one of the drives once before, I believe, a few weeks ago, which was the last time I tried using the HD's. The other wouldn't turn on at all, so I decided to exchange it for a new one. The new one failed and started clicking the next day! Haven't messed with them since. Just went to use them now and sure enough, same problem again. After browsing diff sites and solutions, and I read something about using diff power supplies. I realized I had lost one of the power cords and was using a diff one (not the one that came with the HD's). Plugged it in just now and both booted up fine.
Possible Solution: Make sure you're using the supplied power cords...

Sounds like your drive is failing
the clicking you hear is the read head bangin' on the disc - this is common with failing drives.

you can try removing the drive and install it as a slave in your PC and maybe you can get some data from it, assuming it is not completely dead.

thanks for rating.

Left my wd book elite unplugged awhile. now computer won't recognize it. plugged in same way and in same position on my desk

Try plugging the usb cable directly to a usb port on your computer and not through a usb hub. Also make sure the ac adapter for the Western Digital is getting power and the light on the drive is on. Also a recent update to your virus program could be blocking it( it happened to mine).

My computer now recognizes the drive but

See: http://www.fixya.com/support/t3770934-western_digital_hard_drive_isnt

Connect the external drive
Click Start
Right-mouse click on My Computer
Click Manage
Click Storage
Click Disk Management (Local)
Does it show the 500GB as "raw" or "unformatted" space?
If so, then "create a partition".

Should i keep the my book pluged in at all times?

It will not hurt it for you to have it plugged in at all times. It was made to be run as long as you'd like.
