I have a 1996 Dodge Ram with a lot of miles on it. I noticed last night that the oil pressure is fluxuating quite a bit. It will go from 40 down to 20 and back up and then to low and then back to 40 for a minute and then down to 10 and so on. What do you think the problem is and where should I start to fix it?

oil sending units go out occasionaly and dont really mess anything up other than leaking oil on the ground just make sure you have the correct amount of oil in the motor and youll be fine. i just changed mine it quit working around 75,000 miles and i helped change my friends on his dodge he was around 87,000 miles. we both done this last year and no problems have come from it....
we see this a lot, you have either broken a frowardplanetary gear or have lost the froward line pressure in the transmission, you will need to replace the transmission, our shop replace 2 last week for the same problem....sorry
Heavier oil will increase the oil pressure. keep your eye on the gauge for the next few days & take notice of any change. If so have it checked out. Hopefully it will stay where its at for now. At 1200 miles the pressure should decrease some after the oil impurities are broke down
Mate .2 things. The oil pressure sending unit is playing up or its not.The other is how long since an oil /filter change. If you know the oil is ok ,get the sender unit fixed.Oil is a lot cheaper than metal if things are not right. If it happens all of a sudden, the sender unit may be at fault.Hope this helps
your oil pump does that on purpose - more noticeable with a dented oilpan as pressure is slightly increased. nothing to do until it goes (if it goes) unless you want to throw parts at your car anyways.
I had the same problem and ended up changing the oil pump and it did not fix it. (Peace of mind anyway and it was cheap) I replaced the pressure sensor (that happens to be tucked in deep between the back of the engine and firewall) and the pressure gauge worked just fine after that.
Just to add, hope this helps with sensor location. The spec I saw was 30--80 psi oil pressure at 3000 rpms. In the old days they used to say for generic spec, 10 psi for every 1000 rpms. Always use the proper spec. You might be able to use analog pressure gage to screw in to replace sending unit to double check oil pressure. Just my opinion.
