I Need to replace the motherboard on my Acer Extensa 5420-5687. Does any one have a procedure for this?

Then you can check 2 things to see if the machine will boot. If not, then you'll need to get it repaired. FYI, I repair Acers.

Step 1 - remove the battery and the A/C adapter from the back of the computer for about 2 minutes. Replace the battery and the adapter and try to start the machine. If that doesn't work, go to step 2.

Step 2 - Check that the A/C adapter is getting power and the LED for battery charging on the front of the computer lights. You can check the voltage from the power supply with a volt meter, if you have one -- it should read around 18-19 volts. If either of these steps don't work, you'll need to get it looked at.

Problems could be with the power supply, motherboard, power switch, CPU or something else that only time and expertise could properly track down.

Either CPU is faulty, or the heatsink has lost aderence with the CPU surface or coolin power.
Atandard procedure is refitting or replacing cooling fan, in some rare occasion is the CPU, but that is uncommon and can't be tested.
Another possible cause is the temp sensor on the motherboard that is faulty.
first ensure that is overheating and check temp sensor using SpeedFan - Access temperature sensor in your computer.

but it is for a 5420, is this your model. Also how old is your computer because it may be under warranty.

If its asking for a password to thehard drive no replacing the motherboard wont solve this because the password is on the hard drive itself.
