I have a newer kennwood amp hooked up to an L5 Kicker 12" and when I turn my car on the power light goes on but dims out right away and the sub does not make noise.

U need a capacitor and a new battery. the capacitor stores reserve power to power the sub and ur old battery isn't producing enough juice for the amp so get a new one

i bought two Audiobahn A2300hcx on ebay for a little over 400. look around on ebay you can really score sometime dirt cheap........ Check out audiobahn amps, never did me any wrong...........
there is a safety feauture in the amp that shuts if off it is getting to much power from cd player outputs. all amps have this. some cd players also have this. unfortunately there is no way to get around this besides turning up the amp and turning down cd player
